Jesus, on days like today, this day between Good Friday and Easter, it’s sometimes hard to see and believe that truly You are the Son of God. From our earthly view it doesn’t necessarily look like it or feel like it. Yet, in these days you hold us steady. It looks like nothing is happening. It looks like all hope is lost, but today is just the day of preparation. You’re working behind the scenes and all of heaven is about to break loose. Prepare us today for what any of our tomorrows will bring. And prepare us for the day when we will stare at your face, like the centurion, and with 100% full confidence be able to declare, TRULY YOU ARE THE SON OF GOD.
Until then, hold us in peace.

The gospel is this: In any and every moment where a martyrdom of self is required, the Holy Spirit will give you strength from the cross because of Jesus’ witness. “Father forgive them,” doesn’t stop short when you have a bad day. The gates of hell and their dread horde of death can do nothing about the moment coming up. This Christ, the Son of the Living God, is willing to go the place of Calvary. It is an unspeakable space at the edge of the chasm of Hell. The Christ of God will go there, not kneeling, but pinned to a cross so that even a centurion who stands there will say, “Truly, this was the Son of God.”
