“The Hebrew word for work is avodah. But this is a word that does much work itself. For it means more than merely labor. It also connotes formal elements of worship and the sacrificial rite. And perhaps most compellingly, it conveys a sense of service beyond self—either for God or on behalf of others and the community. And so, what AI could supplant is more than simply the purposeful empowerment of human labor.
