Act for Creation, week of July 19th

Microplastics are in our drinking water, food, air, soil, wildlife, and even human blood, placentas, lungs, and other tissues. Washington Physicians for Social Responsibility, a group of health professionals, scientists, patients, parents, and community members, are asking for our help encouraging state leaders to monitor, reduce, and prevent microplastic pollution. Orcas, our beloved, iconic native species of the waters surrounding us, have their own day of
celebration–World Orca Day–on Tuesday. Plastic pollution severely impacts orcas by acting as a vector for toxic chemicals (like PCBs and PFAS). They bioaccumulate in orcas, causing immune system suppression, reproductive failure, and population declines. To mitigate this threat, you can reduce your plastic usage, minimize chemical disposal, and participate in clean-up efforts. You can find Cleaner Alki’s clean up events at https://www.byandby.org/.

The week is the UK’s 25th annual Net Zero Week–25 years of talking about reaching the point where any greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions produced by human activity are balanced by the amount removed from the atmosphere. Over these years, global emissions have risen substantially to concentration levels in the atmosphere not seen in 3 to 5 million years. What can you do? Plenty. Climate change (warming, acidification, deoxygenation), overfishing, plastic pollution, habitat destruction, and chemical pollution are the greatest threats to all ocean life. Driven by human activity, these cause coral bleaching, species extinction, ecosystem collapse, and dead zones. Microplastics—plastic pieces smaller than 5mm—are ubiquitous on beaches globally, acting as major sinks for pollution from textiles, fishing gear, and degraded debris. They can alter the nesting environments of sea turtles, increasing humidity and affecting egg survival. They are ingested by shorebirds and marine animals, leading to potential starvation, starvation-like effects, and chemical exposure.
