People of Peace Lutheran Seattle

People of Peace Lutheran Seattle Open Hearts - Open Doors Peace is a vibrant, welcoming, multigenerational congregation located in the Gatewood Hill neighborhood of West Seattle.

When our congregation was organized in 1944, during World War II, our first members chose the name PEACE as an expression of their hopes and prayers for peace in the world and in their lives. Sixty-seven years later, we continue with this “ministry of reconciliation”, cultivating the peace of God in our families, congregation, neighborhood, and world.

Act for Creation, week of June 7th

Microplastics—plastic pieces smaller than 5mm—are ubiquitous on beaches globally, acting as major sinks for pollution from textiles, fishing gear, and degraded debris. They can alter the nesting environments of sea turtles, increasing humidity and affecting egg survival. They are ingested by shorebirds and marine animals, leading to potential starvation, starvation-like effects, and chemical exposure. As we celebrate and imagine the holy spirit in the image of the dove, consider these words from Thomas Merton: "The sky is my prayer, the birds are my prayer, the wind in the trees is my prayer, for God is all in all." – Creation Justice Ministries’ 52 Ways to Care for Creation

Act for Creation, week of May 17th

Climate scientist and communicator extraordinaire Katharine Hayhoe reported that a few years ago, a team trained a chatbot on the latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change reports. Now, instead of wading through the three volumes and thousands of pages, she says you can just ask https://www.chatclimate.ai/ a question - and get an accurate answer. Give it a try!

ChatClimate – grounded on the latest IPCC Report. We make Climate Risk understandable and climate information more accessible to the broader communities.

Act for Creation, week of May 10th

This is a week to get on your bike and ride with “Bike Everywhere Day” on the 14th and “National Bike to Work Day” on the 15th. Even if you don’t ride yourself, you likely have friends and family members who do. How can you support your cyclists and help keep them safe? Be the kind of driver who gives cyclists extra space on the road! And be an advocate for better, safer infrastructure like separated bike lanes.

Hi, friends. Kathleen Fueger here.
Last weekend John and I attended "The Traveler and the Bishop on the State of American Democracy and Christian Nationalism," a talk given by Rick Steves and Bishop Shelley Bryan Wee. Their comments are insightful, thought-provoking, and well worth your time. The links to the talk as well as some additional resources they provided are in the comments below.

As we close out Earth Month, take a moment to reflect on this proverb: "We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors, we have borrowed it from our children."

Act for Creation, Week of April 19th

Throughout Earth Month, Goodwill and its collaboration partners have sponsored ReMakeDays, a series of events intended to empower people to extend the life of clothes they already own and reimagine what’s possible with secondhand items. At noon this Fri., Apr. 24, is a workshop on “Fashion Upcycling and Visible Mending” in Renton. And at 3pm Sat., Apr. 25, is the “Second Life Runway Collection” at the Seattle Flagship location. More information on all this at https://evergreengoodwill.org/remake-days/.

Act for Creation, Week of April 5th, Easter Sunday

In the Gospels, we find Jesus in close relationship with the natural world–walking along the seashore and up mountains, taking boats out on the lake, and spending weeks alone praying in the
wilderness.

Let us follow his lead as we celebrate his resurrection by making time to really see the natural world, give thanks for all of creation, and pledge to do all we can to protect it from the damage
we inflict through the way we consume, travel, spend and live.

Act for Creation for Holy Week

On Good Friday, we confront the ways we have caused suffering in the world. As we remember the death of Jesus, let us acknowledge the suffering we have inflicted upon God's Creation. In our mourning, may we resolve to be healers and helpers. May we actively participate in the resurrection of our environment.
