💙 Philoptochos Caregiver Support Group 💙 Caring for a loved one can be overwhelming - you don't have to do it alone. Join our confidential, non-judgmental Caregiver Support Group, led by professionals, as we come together on Zoom for meaningful conversation, guidance, and encouragement.

Over four consecutive Tuesday evenings, we'll explore practical tools and best practices for navigating the physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges of caregiving. Topics include self-care, managing emotions, family dynamics, long-distance and holiday caregiving, financial concerns, and planning for the future. Our final session, led by Rev. Dr. Harry Pappas, will focus on how faith, prayer, spirituality, and cultural traditions can deepen understanding and strengthen resilience.

In the closing years of the 1800s, waves of immigrants from Greece, Asia Minor, and Constantinople arrived in American port cities carrying little more than the Orthodox faith, the Greek language, and imbedded social customs that sustained them for generations. The women who journeyed across the Mediterranean and the Atlantic formed small clubs inside their new parishes. These clubs welcomed newcomers and strangers alike, helped families navigate an unfamiliar country, and instilled their faith and their Hellenic identity in future generations.

Long before Philoptochos had bylaws and a national board, this instinct to uphold the Orthodox faith and the Hellenic experience through hospitality, service, and community building was and remains its founding principle.

It took until 1931 for that instinct to become an institution. That November, in the middle of the Great Depression, Archbishop Athenagoras, who would later become Ecumenical Patriarch, brought more than 300 existing women’s philanthropic chapters under one national structure.

Στα τέλη του 19ου αιώνα, αλλεπάλληλα κύματα μεταναστών από την Ελλάδα, τη Μικρά Ασία και την Κωνσταντινούπολη έφταναν, με τα λιγοστά τους υπάρχοντα, στα λιμάνια των Ηνωμένων Πολιτειών. Μαζί τους έφερναν και την Ορθόδοξη πίστη, την ελληνική γλώσσα και τα ήθη εκείνα που για γενιές ολόκληρες θα αποτελούσαν το στήριγμά τους. Στις νέες ενορίες τους, οι γυναίκες εκείνες που είχαν διασχίσει τη Μεσόγειο και τον Ατλαντικό άρχισαν να ιδρύουν μικρούς συλλόγους. Υποδέχονταν νεοφερμένους και ξένους, βοηθούσαν τις οικογένειες να βρουν σε μια άγνωστη χώρα τον δρόμο τους και, μεταφέροντας στις επόμενες γενιές την πίστη, καλλιεργούσαν μαζί και τα στοιχεία της ελληνικής πολιτισμικής τους ταυτότητας. Έτσι, προτού να αποκτήσει επίσημο καταστατικό και παναμερικανική οργάνωση η Φιλόπτωχος, είχε κιόλας διαμορφώσει τον βασικό πυρήνα της αποστολής της: τη διαφύλαξη της Ορθόδοξης πίστης και της ελληνικής παράδοσης μέσα από την έκφραση της φιλοξενίας, την προσφορά στον συνάνθρωπο και τη δημιουργία ισχυρών κοινοτικών δεσμών. Οι αρχές αυτές εξακολουθούν να κατευθύνουν το έργο της μέχρι σήμερα.

As National Philoptochos wishes you a safe and happy Fourth of July, we keep coming back to this: 250 years of freedom. A lifetime of faith. The kind of promise that only holds because people keep showing up for one another, generation after generation.

We come from a tradition that believes service is its own kind of patriotism. So today, alongside the fireworks and the flags, we're grateful for that too.
