Or Shalom Jewish Community

Or Shalom Jewish Community SF's sole Reconstructionist community with unique and down-to-earth Jewish practices. Bold. Relevant. Barrier-Free.

Founded 33 years ago, Or Shalom Jewish Community began with a group of San Franciscans who wanted a Judaism for their children that would teach peace, welcome interfaith families and allow diverse, questioning voices to be heard. From our founders’ aspirations came the name Or Shalom, Light of Peace. We are known for:
Our warm community of members, new and long-established
Our roots in compassion

and peace-seeking activism
Our unique and down-to-earth Jewish practices
Our bold and enthusiastic initiative
Our open arms to all

Or Shalom Jewish Community continues to thrive as the sole source for Reconstructionist observance in the greater San Francisco area. Reconstructionists approach Judaism—and life—with deep consideration of the past and a passion to relate it to the present. In a rapidly changing world, Reconstructionist communities create new ways of being Jewish to connect us and ensure our lives are filled with purpose. Reconstructionists experiment tirelessly with ideas, practices, and institutions.

Join us this Sunday for a Shavuot hike to the Peaks! ✨🥾

Sunday, May 17 | 10:00 AM–12:00 PM

Celebrate Shavuot with us on a scenic community hike from Glen Canyon Creeks to Peaks North Trailhead (Portola Dr & Glenview Dr) up toward Twin Peaks.

Along the way, we’ll reflect on Moses’ climb up Mount Sinai with a few meaningful moments to pause, connect, and take in the views 🌿🏔️

The hike is about 2 miles round trip and best for those with solid physical ability. We’ll keep a flexible pace based on the group and the weather. All ages welcome!

Join Or Shalom & community for an interactive Passover-inspired walk through San Francisco's newest park! As we stroll along the beach, we'll explore innovative ways people are connecting with Passover. This family-friendly event is suitable for all ages, with group discussions, learning opportunities, and games for children.

The program will conclude at 12 p.m., and we invite everyone to bring lunch and snacks to share, enjoying a community picnic in the park. Be prepared for a fair amount of walking, so don't forget sunscreen, water, comfortable shoes, and anything else you'll need to stay comfortable.
