Or Shalom Jewish Community

Or Shalom Jewish Community SF's sole Reconstructionist community with unique and down-to-earth Jewish practices. Bold. Relevant. Barrier-Free.

Founded 33 years ago, Or Shalom Jewish Community began with a group of San Franciscans who wanted a Judaism for their children that would teach peace, welcome interfaith families and allow diverse, questioning voices to be heard. From our founders’ aspirations came the name Or Shalom, Light of Peace. We are known for:
Our warm community of members, new and long-established
Our roots in compassion

and peace-seeking activism
Our unique and down-to-earth Jewish practices
Our bold and enthusiastic initiative
Our open arms to all

Or Shalom Jewish Community continues to thrive as the sole source for Reconstructionist observance in the greater San Francisco area. Reconstructionists approach Judaism—and life—with deep consideration of the past and a passion to relate it to the present. In a rapidly changing world, Reconstructionist communities create new ways of being Jewish to connect us and ensure our lives are filled with purpose. Reconstructionists experiment tirelessly with ideas, practices, and institutions.

This school year's programming launches in just a couple of weeks!

We're so excited for a year filled with embodied, community-rooted, and transformative learning for all. Our programs specialize in reimagining Judaism for our current times, taking old ritual and making things fit us and our needs now.

We have an amazing K-6th Community School, a 7th-grade B'Mitzvah program, an all-ages Alef Bet class (for the whole family and individual adults as well!), and a brand-new Teen Havurah for 8th-12th grades, focusing on adventure, service, and deep collective belonging.

The Mystery of the Alef-Bet
Sunday, August 16, 2026 • 3 Elul 5786
2:00 PM - 3:45 PM
331 Cortland Ave

When someone speaks, what do we hear? When “God appears,” what do we see? A Chasidic teaching will deepen our understanding of these questions and also open our eyes to the glorious mystery of our Hebrew letters.

In this workshop with Rabbi Me’irah, we will be learning the ways the letters scaffold our world, through storytelling and through the artistic rendering of our very own first letter.

Join us for the High Holy Days

SPEAK THE WORLD INTO BEING

בָּרוּךְ שֶׁאָמַר וְהָיָה הָעוֹלָם

Judaism offers us a unique lens when it comes to words.

Whether it is the first Genesis story, from which we learn that the world came into being through primordial speech, or Deuteronomy, where we learn that Torah is not in the heavens, but, rather, is as close to us as our own lips, words hold a certain power within our tradition. So much so that the word for “word” and “thing” in Hebrew are one and the same:דָּבָר

As Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel put it, “words create worlds.”’

Which means that what we say, the stories we tell, and the language through which we communicate them have the power to shape reality.

In a time where words–whether they be the ancient words of Torah or the contemporary words of our governmental and institutional leaders–are being used to not only to justify, but manifest extreme violence, what duty do we hold to tell a different story? What duty do we have, through our words, to create a new world? What duty do we have to write a new Torah?

Each morning, our prayer book invites us to recite:

בָּרוּךְ שֶׁאָמַר וְהָיָה הָעוֹלָם

“Blessed is that which spoke the world into being.”

This High Holy Days season–a season of world creation and world-building–may we harness the power of speech and story for the good, to figuratively speak into being the world that we, the people, need and deserve.
