O Holy Blessed One, we acknowledge before you that the treatment accorded the Jewish people on the part of Christian believers has been a tragic development in the long history of Christianity. This includes the horrors of the Holocaust of the twentieth century in places where Lutheran churches were strongly represented. With deep and abiding sorrow, we confess before you and one another, that we have too often been silent before, or complicit in, the sad contagion of anti-Semitism which continues to this day.

O Maker and Keeper of us all, reform our faith and our living to reflect more boldly your endless mercy.

-A Litany of Confession based on the "Declaration of ELCA to the Jewish Community"

31 October is Reformation Day

"Each morning, and whenever else I have time, I do as a child who is being taught the catechism and I read and recite word for word the Lord’s Prayer, the Ten Commandments, the Creed, the Psalms, etc. I must still read and study the catechism daily, and yet I cannot master it as I wish, but must remain a child and pupil of the catechism — and I also do so gladly."

Martin Luther in the Preface to the Large Catechism

Today is the International Day of Peace. 🕊️ Let us pray, "O God, it is your will to hold both heaven and earth in a single peace. Let the design of your great love shine on the waste of our wraths and sorrows, and give peace to your church, peace among nations, peace in our homes, and peace in our hearts; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (ELW, p. 76)." 🌏

Most merciful God, as we remember 9/11, bring comfort to those who mourn, relief to those who witness devastation, healing to those still suffering physical pain or emotional trauma, and reconciliation to a world in need of peace; through Christ our Lord, the resurrection and the life. Amen.

Devastating flooding at Ethiopia's Mekane Yesus Seminary

The Lutheran World Federation has sent a letter of solidarity and prayers to the Mekane Yesus Seminary and to The Ethiopian Evangelical Church Mekane Yesus (EECMY), after devastating floods swept through the seminary’s compound and surrounding area in Addis Ababa.

"We are saddened to hear about the loss of life and damage to buildings as a result of the flooding,” said Ms Eva Christina Nilson, director of the Department for Theology Mission and Justice, in a letter to the church and seminary.

"We want to assure you of our solidarity and prayers as you respond to the pain and suffering from this disaster on the seminary’s community and beyond."

According to the EECMY seminary, eight people have died and search efforts are ongoing to find many more who are missing.
