What comfort do you receive from knowing that God is loving and powerful?

A. This powerful and loving God is the one whose promises I may trust in all the circumstances of my life, and to whom I belong in life and in death.

Reflection:
The comfort of faith is knowing that we belong to God. In every circumstance: joy, sorrow, uncertainty, sickness, grief, change, and even death, we are held by the powerful and loving God whose promises never fail.

Scripture to Read:
Romans 14:8, “If we live, we live for the Lord; and if we die, we die for the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord.”

Question for Today:
What circumstance in my life do I need to place under God’s trustworthy promises today?

Prayer:
Powerful and loving God, thank You that I belong to You in life and in death. Help me trust Your promises in every circumstance and rest in the comfort of Your faithful care. Amen.

Honor a Father figure in your life this week.

As we celebrate Father’s Day this weekend and honor the men who have shaped our lives, it is also a beautiful time to remember our spiritual forefathers, the early church fathers who laid the foundation for our faith.

One of the most remarkable of these "fathers" is Polycarp of Smyrna, a vital link in the history of the early Church. As detailed in this video, Polycarp of Smyrna: The Bishop Who Died for His Faith, Polycarp was an "apostolic father," meaning he was personally discipled by those who knew Christ. In fact, Polycarp was a direct disciple of the Apostle John. Because of this, he carried the firsthand testimony of the apostles into the second century, bridging the gap for future generations.

Serving faithfully as the Bishop of Smyrna, Polycarp dedicated his life to teaching proper doctrine, encouraging church unity, and rebuking heresy. To the Christians of his era, he was a true spiritual father. His legacy culminated in AD 155 when, at 86 years old, he chose a martyr's death over betraying his Savior, famously declaring: "Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He never did me wrong. How then can I blaspheme my King and my Savior?"

This weekend, as we thank the fathers and father figures in our families, let's also give thanks for the spiritual forefathers like Polycarp, whose fierce devotion and preservation of the truth allow us to walk in the faith we hold dear today.
