This Hispanic Heritage Month, we celebrate our Hispanic and Latino/a/e neighbors and the many ways your culture, traditions, music, food, and stories have shaped our community. ❤
We’re also celebrating the Hispanic and Latino/a/e people who are part of Genesis’s own story. The Guzman family has been part of this community for generations. Sandra Guzman de Grimm has served Genesis for many years, including as an elder, while spending 40 years teaching Spanish, including 25 years at Oak Park High School. Her sister, Beatrice Guzman, gifted the grand piano that still helps lead us in worship today. We’re grateful for their leadership, generosity, and service.
Celebration means making room for the whole story. We acknowledge the fear and pain many families are experiencing amid increased immigration enforcement, racial profiling, family separation, and inhumane detention conditions. Loving our neighbors means seeing that pain, mourning with those who mourn, and telling the truth about injustice.
This month, we see you. We celebrate you. And we commit to learning one another’s stories as we work toward a more just and loving world. ❤

The second slide has an arched frame with a photo of the library area at Genesis, currently containing a display of books by Hispanic theologians. The remaining four slides contain the words also written in the caption. The Genesis: the Church logo is on the bottom of each slide.
