The Loukoumi Make A Difference Foundation in New York closed its 19th annual International Make A Difference with Loukoumi Day on Saturday, Oct. 24, with a visit to the construction site of the new St. Michael’s Home in Uniondale, where the foundation pledged to raise $50,000 to create a Loukoumi Lounge.

The foundation arrived on its Loukoumi Good Deed Bus and made a pledge at the site, where construction is underway. The group toured the building, including the space where the lounge will be built, and made a $3,000 deposit toward the pledge.

The lounge is intended as a gathering place where residents can socialize and spend time with visiting volunteers and family, according to the foundation.

Big or small, every gift matters. 🤍

October 28th and March 25th are the only two times each year that Philoptochos comes together in a collective appeal for Greece and Cyprus. Each gift joins with others across the country to help us respond to needs as they arise and extend our ministry beyond our own communities.

Let us take from today’s anniversary two precious legacies: From the heroes of 1940, freedom as responsibility and sacrifice. And from Christ our Lord, freedom as truth, love, and communion. May the memory of all who fought and gave their lives for the freedom of our homeland be eternal. And may we be found worthy to hand down to the generations to come not only the memory of the heroes of 1940, its flame unquenched, but also the precious heritage of their ideals, whole and untarnished: the principles and values that inspired their struggle, steeled their resolve, and were sealed by their supreme sacrifice on the altar of freedom. May God bless Greece, Cyprus, our Hellenic diaspora, and the United States of America.

Long live the 28th of October!

Ας κρατήσουμε από τη σημερινή επέτειο δύο πολύτιμες παρακαταθήκες: Από τους ήρωες του 1940, την ελευθερία ως ευθύνη και θυσία. Και από τον Χριστό μας, την ελευθερία ως αλήθεια, αγάπη και κοινωνία. Ας είναι αιωνία η μνήμη όλων εκείνων που αγωνίστηκαν και θυσιάστηκαν για την ελευθερία της πατρίδας μας. Και είθε να αξιωθούμε να παραδώσουμε στις επερχόμενες γενεές όχι μόνον άσβεστη τη μνήμη των ηρώων του 1940, αλλά και αλώβητη την πολύτιμη κληρονομιά των ιδανικών τους, τις αρχές και τις αξίες εκείνες που ενέπνευσαν τον αγώνα τους, ενίσχυσαν το φρόνημά τους και επισφραγίστηκαν με την υπέρτατη θυσία τους στον βωμό της ελευθερίας.

Ο Θεός να ευλογεί την Ελλάδα, την Κύπρο, την Ομογένειά μας και τις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες της Αμερικής.

Today, we honor the courage, bravery, and unwavering spirit of the Greek people who stood up for freedom and proudly declared “OXI” on October 28, 1940. 🇬🇷

At St. Demetrios Greek-American School, we are proud to celebrate this important day in Greek history and to pass on its legacy of courage, sacrifice, and Hellenic pride to our students. 💛💙

XRONIA POLLA!!! OXI DAY is a national public holiday and commemorated on October 28th every year in Greece 🇬🇷, Cyprus 🇨🇾 and by Greeks around the world 💙.

On this day 86 years ago, the Prime Minister of Greece, Ioannis Metaxas denied Benito Mussolini’s request to allow Italian troops to cross the border into Greece. He responded to the Italian ultimatum in French, the diplomatic language at the time, “Alors, c’est la gueree!” or “Then it is War!”.

In the days following, the word of Metaxas’ denial had spread around the capital and the Greek population took to the streets shouting “Oxi!” (NO). His decision made on October 28th, 1940, is commemorated each year as a day that represents bravery, solidarity and heroism for millions of Greeks all around the world.

Although Greece had tried to remain neutral in the early days of WWII, it was at this time it became allied with Great Britain. The Greek Army turned out to be a formidable force, holding back the Axis forces from entering Greece for almost six months. This is the first time a country stood up to the Axis Powers with any amount of success. Greece gave the rest of the world hope that the Axis could, in fact, be defeated.

Winston Churchill commented at the time of the Greco-Italian war and famously said,
“Hence we will not say that Greeks fight like heroes, but that heroes fight like Greeks.” 💪🇬🇷💪
