Father Martin Gillespie, pastor of St. Mary Parish in Woolmarket, died unexpectedly this morning. Father Gillespie served as a priest of the Diocese of Biloxi for 26 years. We give thanks to God for his priestly ministry. Please keep the Gillespie family and the St. Mary Parish family in your prayers.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.

May the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Peter had just proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah. Moments later, Jesus rebukes him: “Get behind me, Satan!”
Peter wanted Christ without the Cross. He could not yet see that Jesus’ suffering and death were not defeats, but the very means of salvation.
We often think the same way, wanting faith without suffering and discipleship without sacrifice. But Jesus reminds us that the Cross is not something to escape at all costs. When embraced with Him, even suffering can become a place of grace, love, and redemption.
There is no Christianity without the Cross, but there is also no Cross without the promise of resurrection.
