History of Sierra Pines

In the early eighties a group of people met in the pine trees at Camp Oakhurst for worship and Bible study. When the faithful few grew to thirty-five people in 1989, they called Bruce Newton to be their pastor and named their group Sierra Pines Church. The snowfall on the hills around the camp often prevented the growing group from meeting, so many Sunday mornings the chur

ch had to meet in town. They met at hotel rooms, restaurants, and more than once they fired up the oven at The Pizza Factory and ate pizza and bread sticks as they gathered for worship. When one hundred and fifty people were gathering each week, they contracted with the Met Cinema in town to hold church there, and a couple of years later, Sierra Pines bought a small building on Hwy 49. By God’s amazing grace, this property at 40855 Covey Court became available and the building you see now was erected in 1996. Today with thirty-four acres of potential building site, and three services every Sunday, over eight hundred people call Sierra Pines Church home. For the last twenty-seven years, Bruce and a committed staff, along with faithful volunteers continually share the church’s mission statement: “To love people the way they are and to inspire them to all God has called them to be.” If you want a church where you can be accepted and challenged to grow spiritually and personally, then this is the place for you. Consider this a personal invitation. You are welcome here.

“A Silly Donkey”

Zechariah 9:9, “Rejoice, O people of Zion! Shout in triumph, O people of Jerusalem!
Look, your king is coming to you. He is righteous and victorious, yet he is humble, riding
on a donkey—riding on a donkey’s colt” (NLT).

This is a prophecy about Jesus, long before Jesus arrived as a baby upon this earth.
It is also a promise.
A promise that no matter what, Jesus is victorious.
A promise that no matter what, the King is coming to you.
A promise that the King is riding into your life.
A promise that the King is righteous and victorious.
A promise that the King will come in humbleness, not by force or intrusion.

Jesus will come riding into your life on a silly donkey.
Wherever you are, these promises are for you.

If you are battling for your mind, battling an addiction, or battling for your family,
Jesus is victorious.

If you are navigating the waters of divorce or in pain because of the loss of a child or don’t
know what to believe of the truth of your identity, Jesus is coming to you.

If you have felt lost your whole life, or believe you are unworthy, or can’t see a way out of your
circumstances, Jesus is righteous and victorious.
Jesus will lead you through.

If you feel unseen, unlovable, unworthy, or unappreciated, Jesus can ride into your life in
the most unexpected way possible. To do the most unexpected thing.

Jesus will come. It might not be in the way or time or manner that you expect.
Jesus might arrive on a silly donkey.

Psalm 139 states that God knows everything about me.
God knows what I am battling or contending for.
God knows the things I fight, that seem like they are battling and contending for me.
God knows.

And He is going to arrive.
Jesus is going to arrive in a way that you didn’t expect, in a manner you don’t expect.
(Like a silly donkey or a baby in a manger)

Will you receive Him?
Will you look for Him?

May we receive Jesus this Advent season.
May we look for Jesus this Advent season.
I know I am.
I hope you are too.
