Christian Science Society Newport Oregon

Christian Science Society Newport Oregon We come together to understand our spiritual nature as the image and likeness of God, using as our guide the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy.

We come together to learn more about our spiritual nature as the image and likeness of divine Love, the Principle of all being. We use as our guides the Bible and the book Science & Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. We work to apply what we are learning to our lives. We do not judge other people, their backgrounds or lifestyles, but join together to help each grow in spiritual

understanding and practice. You are always welcome at any of our services and activities. You can come Sunday mornings at 10 am and listen to a Bible Lesson read on a topic of interest. On the first and third Wednesdays of the month at 12:30pm, we meet to listen to readings on a special topic and then to share experiences we have had in learning and practicing Christian Science. Every Day Monday through Thursday from 11:30 to 1:30 we open our Reading Room for people to read the Bible Lesson, listen to songs, or read helpful articles and testimonies by those who have been healed in Christian Science.

How wonderful to know people we can trust. In a world of uncertainty and selfishness, such relationships are precious. Even so, the Bible teaches us ultimate trust can and should be placed in God. “Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.” Psalms 16:1. This is apparent when studying this week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson. “All that is made is the work of God, and all is good. The divine Mind maintains all identities, from a blade of grass to a star, as distinct and eternal. In divine Science, man is sustained by God, the divine Principle of being. Let us feel the divine energy of Spirit, bringing us into newness of life and recognizing no mortal nor material power as able to destroy.” “O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusts in him.” Psalms 34:8

Grow your trust in God by studying this week’s Bible Lesson at the Christian Science Reading Room, 14 SW Nye St in Newport, open Monday through Thursday 11:30 to 1:30 pm, or hear it read aloud Sunday mornings at church services at 10 am at Christian Science Society at the same location. You will be inspired by what you learn. The Lesson is based on thoughtfully selected passages from the Bible and Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy. Everyone is welcome. Many people go through life believing that they are separate from any intelligence other than their own. Yet, the Bible teaches us that God is divine intelligence that provides all good, blessing each one of us. “O Lord, how manifold are thy works! in wisdom hast thou made them all: the earth is full of thy riches.” Psalms 104:24. This week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson explains, “The Scriptures imply that God is All-in-all. He is divine Principle, Love, the universal cause, the only creator, and there is no other self-existence. Father-Mother is the name for Deity, which indicates His tender relationship to His spiritual creation. To those leaning on the sustaining infinite, to-day is big with blessings.

Civility. Right behavior. The Golden Rule. All societies need these essential elements to function harmoniously. The Bible leads us directly toward these qualities and behaviors. “Be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:32. This week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson goes to the heart of the matter in revealing the all power of God, divine Love, and exposing the nothingness of evil. “There is no power apart from God. The supremacy of Spirit was the foundation on which Jesus built. Christ is the true idea voicing good, the divine message from God to men speaking to the human consciousness. Resisting evil, you overcome it and prove its nothingness.” “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.” II Corinthians 10:4,5

Explore these ideas by studying this week’s Bible Lesson at the Christian Science Reading Room, 14 SW Nye St in Newport, open Monday through Thursday 11:30 to 1:30 pm, or hear it read aloud Sunday mornings at church services at 10 am at Christian Science Society at the same location. There is nothing like the morning light of a sunny day. It shines brightly into our rooms, illuminating every corner. So it is with the sunlight of Truth which brightens every dark corner of our thinking. “Thou shalt shine forth, thou shalt be as the morning.” Job 11:17. This week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson enlightens the understanding of our spiritual being, God’s creation. “Man is the expression of Soul. Soul has infinite resources with which to bless mankind, and happiness would be more readily attained and would be more secure in our keeping, if sought in Soul. When understanding changes the standpoints of life and intelligence from a material to a spiritual basis, we shall gain the reality of Life, the control of Soul over sense, and we shall perceive Christianity, or Truth, in its divine Principle.” “Arise, shine; for thy light is come, and the glory of the Lord is risen upon thee.” Isaiah 60:1

Discover this for yourself by studying this week’s Bible Lesson at the Christian Science Reading Room, 14 SW Nye St in Newport, open this Thursday 11:30 to 1:30 pm, or hear it read aloud Sunday mornings at church services at 10 am at Christian Science Society at the same location. Appearances can be deceptive. We have seen things appear to be present but upon closer examination are not what we first thought. This is certainly true with seeing who we are. The Bible explains that we are spiritual, although it does not appear that way to the senses. “Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is.” I John 3:2 The Holy Bible, English Standard Version®. This week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson teaches us to put trust in the spiritual and not be deceived by the senses. “The way is straight and narrow, which leads to the understanding that God is the only Life. Mortals must look beyond fading, finite forms, if they would gain the true sense of things. Where shall the gaze rest but in the unsearchable realm of Mind? We must look where we would walk, and we must act as possessing all power from Him in whom we have our being. When we realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor of matter, this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness.”

How do we identify ourselves? By what is written on our drivers license? Or perhaps what a relative or friend tells us? Many find the most accurate way to identify oneself is by listening to God, who is the very source of our being. “And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them, Ye are not my people; there shall they be called the children of the living God.” Romans 9:26 . A willingness to see ourselves spiritually is a courageous act, as explained in this week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson. “Moral courage is requisite to meet the wrong and to proclaim the right. The good you do and embody gives you the only power obtainable. Whatever holds human thought in line with unselfed love, receives directly the divine power. Man and woman as coexistent and eternal with God forever reflect, in glorified quality, the infinite Father-Mother God.” “I am the Lord thy God, the Holy One of Israel, thy Savior: bring my sons from far, and my daughters from the ends of the earth; Even every one that is called by my name: for I have created him for my glory, I have formed him; yea, I have made him.” Isaiah 43:3, 6, 7

When we were children, some of us got into big trouble with our parents, and it was often not a comfortable experience. Does God punish us for our mistakes? The Bible explains that God helps us to grow out of sin to do what is right. “With everlasting kindness will I have mercy on thee, saith the Lord thy Redeemer.” Isaiah 54:8. Spiritual progress is important for each of us, and this week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson has a wonderful lesson for us all. “Divine Love corrects and governs man. Men may pardon, but this divine Principle alone reforms the sinner. Sorrow for wrong-doing is but one step towards reform and the very easiest step. The next and great step required by wisdom is the test of our sincerity, — namely, reformation. Through the wholesome chastisements of Love, we are helped onward in the march towards righteousness, peace, and purity, which are the landmarks of Science.”

There is a popular expression, “Live life to the fullest.” What does this mean? To students of the Bible, the answer is easy. It means to live a God-centered life, filled with inspiration, joy, productivity, and goodwill. “Oh that men would praise the Lord for his goodness, and for his wonderful works to the children of men.” Psalms 107:8. Discover the rich truths God provides by studying this week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson. “Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power. We can, and ultimately shall, so rise as to avail ourselves in every direction of the supremacy of Truth over error, Life over death, and good over evil, and this growth will go on until we arrive at the fulness of God’s idea, and no more fear that we shall be sick and die. If the disciple is advancing spiritually, he is striving to enter in. He constantly turns away from material sense, and looks towards the imperishable things of Spirit. If honest, he will be in earnest from the start, and gain a little each day in the right direction, till at last he finishes his course with joy.”

Sometimes we are separated from a loved one, then are brought back together again. The reunion is a wonderful feeling. This happens when we realize God to be our Father and Mother, caring greatly for us. It’s a wonderful feeling! “It is the spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all: the words that I have spoken unto you are spirit and life,” said Jesus. John 6:63. This week’s Christian Science Bible Lesson explains the meaning of Jesus teachings. “Jesus aided in reconciling man to God by giving man a truer sense of Love, the divine Principle of Jesus’ teachings, and this truer sense of Love redeems man from the law of matter, sin, and death by the law of Spirit, — the law of divine Love. Christ illustrates that blending with God, his divine Principle, which gives man dominion over all the earth. As a drop of water is one with the ocean, a ray of light one with the sun, even so God and man, Father and son, are one in being.”

You can read the Bible Lesson in its entirety at the Christian Science Reading Room, 14 SW Nye St in Newport, open Monday through Thursday 11:30 to 1:30 pm, or hear it read aloud Sunday mornings at church services at 10 am at Christian Science Society at the same location.
