What must you do to inherit eternal? The rich young ruler was asked the same question in Matthew 19:16. Messiah‘s answer was clear: guard the Commandments and follow him.

I studied John 12 this weekend, and one line would not leave me: “And I know that His commandment is life everlasting. Therefore what I say, I say just as the Father has told Me.” (John 12:50 TLV)

Yeshua did not come speaking against His Father’s Torah. He did not bring a new law to replace what Yehovah had already spoken. His words came from the Father.

“What I say, I say just as the Father has told Me.”

Many are taught to see the Father’s commandments and Yeshua’s teaching as if they pull in different directions. Yet Yeshua leaves no room for that divide. To hear Him is to hear the One who sent Him. Loyalty to the Son should bring us into obedience to the Father.

Yehovah had already said through Moses, “I have set before you life and death, the blessing and the curse. Therefore choose life” (Deut 30:19). He then called Israel to love Him, listen to His voice and cling to Him, “for He is your life” (Deut 30:20). Proverbs says, “For the mitzvah is a lamp, Torah a light” (Prov 6:23 TLV).

Then Yeshua says, “Walk while you have the light” (John 12:35).

Walking is more than knowing. We can study Scripture, defend correct doctrine and still resist what Yehovah asks us to do. John tells us that some leaders believed in Yeshua but would not confess Him because they loved the approval of men more than the approval of God (John 12:42–43). They had seen the light, but fear kept them from walking in it.

That warning still speaks. Biblical knowledge without obedience can fill the mind while leaving the life unchanged. Faith must eventually alter our steps.

And the same word that offers life will also judge: “The word I spoke is what will judge him at the last day” (John 12:48).

Yeshua did not call the Father’s commandment bo***ge. He called it everlasting life. We do not earn salvation by keeping Torah. Life comes from Yehovah through faith in His Son. But faith that receives His light cannot knowingly continue rejecting His voice.

Yeshua lived the Torah without sin and revealed its depth, reaching even into the heart. He did not lead us away from the Father’s instruction.
He spoke exactly what the Father told Him.

PS: Some will respond by saying that Yeshua brought a new law because He established the New Covenant. But covenant and Torah are not the same thing. A covenant is the binding relationship; Torah contains Yehovah’s instruction for living within that relationship.

And the passages usually quoted do not say that Yehovah would replace His Torah with a different law. Jeremiah says, “I will put My Torah within them. Yes, I will write it on their heart” (Jer 31:33 TLV). Ezekiel says Yehovah will give His people a new heart and His Ruach so that they will “walk in My laws, and keep My rulings and obey them” (Ezek 36:26–27 TLV).

The renewed covenant changes where Torah is written and gives us the Spirit to walk in it. Neither passage announces a new Torah. Both describe Yehovah bringing His people back into faithful obedience to the instruction He had already given.

And this agrees perfectly with Yeshua’s words: “What I say, I say just as the Father has told Me” (John 12:50).
