In January, the Institute for Christian Spirituality launches "A Year with Thomas Merton," an online series exploring the spiritual life through the writings of one of the 20th century’s most enduring voices. Across four seasonal book discussions in 2026, we’ll trace the arc of Merton’s life and thought—from the restless energy of his early years to the deep integration of contemplation and action that defined his mature vision.

The 2026 series begins with "The Seven Storey Mountain," Merton's classic autobiography that introduced him to the world. This deeply personal narrative tells the story of a young man’s restless search for meaning amid the noise and ambition of modern life. Through art, intellect, failure and grace, Merton’s journey becomes a mirror for our own movement from self-centered striving toward a life grounded in purpose and faith.

Cost: $100 for four sessions. Lipscomb faculty and staff can email [email protected] for a $40 discount code; students may also email ICS to receive a discount code for $10 tickets.

Each hour-long session will be presented via Zoom from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. CT on Jan. 6, Jan. 13, Jan. 20 and Jan. 27.

Join Hazelip School of Theology professor Alden Bass, Ph.D., for a 4-week course exploring the life and teachings of St. Augustine, one of the most influential voices in Christian history. We'll trace Augustine's restless and passionate journey to God and his profound insights into love, community, and the life of faith. Each week, we'll engage a central theme—discovering how his ancient wisdom continues to illuminate the path of Christian spirituality and discipleship today.

Can we exclude some part of our lives or personhood from discipleship? Can we disregard any of our human faculties in spiritual formation - our thoughts, feelings, imagination, or will? The obvious answer is “no.” The life-long processes of discipleship and spiritual formation include our whole selves in relationship with others. Our transformation includes our whole being, and importantly what the New Testament refers to as our heart, mind, soul, spirit - our “inner being” (Rom. 7:22; Eph. 3:16).
