This week our lesson is from John chap 4. Jesus and the disciples were leaving Judea and going back to Galilee. If you look at a map, Samaria sat right smack in the middle of both places. Samaria was an area of the northern kingdom of Israel which had been majorly ransacked by foreign invaders and whose people intermarried with them. To Marry outside the Jewish faith was an extreme NoNo and Jews considered them half breeds, “unclean”, and beneath them…..so much so…they would go around Samaria instead of walking thru it…..even crossing the Jordan river to do it! The Samaritans also built their own temple, rejecting the one in Jerusalem, saying theirs was on the original site picked by Moses. There was extreme animosity between both groups. Now I said Jesus was going back to Galilee and you guessed it…..He was not going around! At midday they arrived at a well and stopped to rest. This well happened to have been dug by Jacob himself…..you know the Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob ..Jacob. Jesus sat by the well, while the disciples went into town to buy food, a Samaritan woman came to draw water from the well. This was unusual, since it was the hottest time of day. In ancient times, water had to be drawn by hand and placed in giant jugs and carried by hand……usually by the women! They would come in groups, but this woman was alone. Jesus starts the conversation by asking for a drink of water which startles the woman……1- most men didn’t talk to a woman in public back then and 2- she was a Samaritan. Jesus then jumps in and talks about “living water”. She is confused thinking he is talking about the physical water but Jesus is talking about the spiritual satisfaction that only GOD can provide. He then asks her to go get her “husband”…..we then see where Jesus reveals everything about her. You see the reason she came alone to get water was she had a very “soiled reputation”…..shunned by her own people much less the Jews. Their conversation moves to where you are supposed to worship and in verse 23, Jesus says “true worshipers will worship the FATHER in Spirit and Truth”….not limited by a physical place. The woman then said she knew that “the Messiah” was coming and right then and there, Jesus flat out told her that “ I am He”! At that moment the disciples came back wondering why Jesus was talking to a woman much less a Samaritan, but we know there are no barriers for Jesus…..He will reach out to anyone. The woman ran back to town to tell the people (even those who shunned her) she had met a man who knew everything about her….”could this be the Messiah?” She did not let her reputation stop her from telling others the amazing news! The woman was an example of many who try to satisfy the want and need inside of us with worldly things….but it won’t work. GOD created us with a space inside us that only HE can fill …. We will never be satisfied apart from HIM. Have you met Jesus and tasted the Living Water? If you have….are you running to tell others?? If you haven’t…what are you waiting for!!
In Him who is the only one who satisfies our needs,
Mrs Leesa

What is the most famous or quoted Bible verse? If your answer is John 3:16 you’re right. This is the one most taught to children, the one people remember, and in fact is the Gospel all in one verse. But do you know the background or context of it? Do you know who said it? Our lesson this week was from John chap 3 and it actually begins by describing a man named Nicodemus. He was a very important leader of the Jews. Nicodemus was a Pharisee, probably on the Sanhedrin (court/governing body of Israel) with a pedigree a mile long. He was at the top of the list and thought…..like most Jews ….that he would certainly be ushered into the Kingdom of GOD b/c of who he was. Nicodemus was very intrigued by Jesus and came one “night”(another whole story) to talk to Him. So we find out that John chap 3 is a conversation with Jesus and Nicodemus and Nico starts by admitting that Jesus is special, addressing Him as “Rabbi” (respected teacher) but also saying that He could not perform “these signs(miracles) unless GOD were with Him”. It is here that Jesus says,”…..unless someone is born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of GOD.” Nico has a “wait…what” moment! Totally confused, he asks Jesus how anyone could return to their mother’s womb to be reborn. Of course Nico was only thinking of physical birth and Jesus was speaking of a spiritual rebirth. The Jews (and most others….even today) had come to think it was who you were or what you did that would determine if you entered Heaven. In verse 14, Jesus reminded Nico of the cure GOD gave Moses for the plague stricken
Children in the wilderness…..they had to only believe and look. And then ….in big red letters ….Jesus tells him, “ For GOD so loved the world, that HE gave HIS one and only Son, that whosoever (everyone….anyone) who believes in Him will not perish but have everlasting (eternal) life.” Jesus was describing a spiritual rebirth! The cure for mankind! Verse 16 is followed by “GOD did not send HIS Son to condemn the world, but to save the world thru Him”. Sin condemns us already…and if we do not accept the cure …we will be lost forever. All it takes is believing! Not accomplishments, not a pedigree, just trusting. The spiritual rebirth….the Cure from a loving FATHER, by Holy Spirit, thru a willing Son. Do you believe??
In Him who SAID it,
Mrs Leesa
PS
How about Nicodemus? Did he believe after his nighttime meeting with Jesus? Yes he did…,in fact he helped Joseph of Arimathea prepare Jesus’s body and place Him in the tomb after the crucifixion. He indeed believed!!
