No Relief. Only Jesus.

The 2026 mission team returns home to North Carolina in three days after three weeks of sharing Jesus through multiple VBS days, a youth rally, conversational English classes, manual labor at local church sites, and two women’s conferences.

What do we bring home with us?

We have experienced, in a small way, many of the things the people of the Philippines experience every day.

Living close to the equator, when I say it is hot here, I mean unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. There is no relief. Even in the evening, beads of sweat cause your skin to stick to the sheets as you try to sleep. If you can afford a fan, it offers temporary relief. Yet, there are times when the government schedules what are called “brownouts,” and all the electricity is cut off for hours.

In some coastal areas, water has been unavailable for five months because of the drought. Families walk with jugs to buy a resource that should be freely available.

Income varies greatly by region. Workers in Metro Manila generally earn much more than those in many provincial areas. Food options are limited, and white rice is served at nearly every meal. Jobs pay very little. The average monthly income is about ₱10,000—roughly $250 USD.

As I have watched people endure these daily hardships, I have been reminded that physical suffering points us to a much deeper need. We search for relief from the heat, relief from the drought, relief from financial burdens, and relief from the pressures of this life. But apart from Christ, our souls remain thirsty.

Over these past three weeks, we have had the privilege of telling children, students, women, and families about the One who stood beside a well in Samaria and offered Living Water to a woman whose soul was desperately thirsty. Jesus alone satisfies. His invitation wasn’t just for her. It is for every tribe, every tongue, every nation, and every person.

As we prepare to leave the Philippines, we will carry home memories of the heat, the humidity, the brownouts, and the incredible resilience of the Filipino people. But even more, we will carry home the joy of watching God draw people to Himself through His Word. The greatest need we witnessed was not relief from the heat or relief from poverty. The greatest need was Jesus. And He is enough.

No relief.

Only Jesus.

We gathered together and held hands as we prayed for our four team members, who are making a six-hour drive south today to fly back to the USA tomorrow. Pray for safe travels for Paul, Ben, Tyler, and Willow. We are leaving Maria this morning and heading to the campsite, where there is no internet access. Pray for us as we travel by car six hours north to Kamp Kanawar.

Both Tyler and Ben shared their testimony during church service yesterday. Afterwards, Amanda encouraged the locals not to become complacent. Our primary purpose as Christians is to share the Gospel of Jesus Christ to the lost. Acts 20:17-24 — “However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me — the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.

May it be so for the FBC-MHC Mission Team 🇵🇭.

It's VBS day! 🐞🌱🦗🔍

Last night, the host team here in Dingalan held a celebration party for those of us who traveled from FBC-MHC. A boodle fight is a traditional communal dinner here in the Philippines used to celebrate a victory. Written in white rice on the long table filled with tasty bites, “Thank You!” Afterward, we watched a presentation video recapping the week’s activities and listened to various speeches of gratitude. The videographer for the week is one of the college students. He shared with us that he felt his assigned task at the time was simple. But as the week progressed, he realized God had allowed him to capture the heart and spirit of the work being done. He encouraged each of us to do God's work, no matter what it entails, because God needs all of us to complete it.

We have met with government officials and taught conversational English to emergency responders and college students, as well as pickleball and VBS to children throughout the area. We’ve celebrated the first anniversary of our church plant here in Dingalan, prayed at the two sites in addition to the original church plant, played in the river to cool off, and climbed a mountaintop for the most extraordinary view.

We leave this morning to travel north for approximately four hours. Praise God for a wonderful week and his protection and guidance as we head into week two of three.

They may have written in rice but truly it is written on our hearts — we are so thankful for our family here in Dingalan.

Philippines 1:6 Be confident of this, He who began a good work in you will complete it upon the day of Christ Jesus.
