WHERE ARE OUR ARW ART PEOPLE?!

You know who you are.

You get the class list and immediately start looking for the clay, the glass, the fabric, the paint, the metal... basically anything that gives you permission to spend a week MAKING SOMETHING.

Sometimes creativity doesn’t need a whole afternoon.

It needs 10 minutes.
A blank piece of paper.
A question you haven’t asked before.
A table with people around it.
Permission to try something that might not work.

At re:create, we believe creativity isn’t an extra thing we squeeze in when the “real work” is finished.

Creativity IS part of the work.

So here’s your invitation today:

Do one small thing differently.

Move the chairs. Flip the table.
Ask the weird question.
Use the good markers.
Try the idea you almost talked yourself out of.

A little re:create idea to try at church:

The next time you ask a group a question, don’t ask for answers right away.

Put paper and markers on the tables and give everyone two minutes to draw, doodle, write words, or make a list in response first.

Then invite people to share.

That tiny shift gives the quieter voices in the room time to think, takes some pressure off finding the “right” answer, and opens the conversation to people who process differently.

It works in Bible study, youth group, staff meetings, retreats, Sunday school, even committee meetings.

Sometimes changing how we ask the question changes who gets to answer.

There are so many ways to explore Wild Hope at ARW 2027, and over the next few months, we’re going to introduce you to the classes and leaders who will help bring this year’s theme to life!

First up: Wild Journaling for Wild Hope with Gail Henderson-Belsito.

Give your thoughts, prayers and questions a place to land as you explore journaling through words, images, collage and reflection. Come with a blank journal and leave with pages filled with meaning, plus a creative spiritual practice you can carry home.

Hey creative friends!

We’re looking for photos of communion tables you’ve created in your churches, Montreat spaces, camp settings, retreat centers… anywhere you’ve gathered people around the Table.

Whether it’s beautifully simple or wonderfully creative, we’d love to see it! We’re collecting inspiration to add to our Playology resource library and would love to include as many ideas as possible.

🔥 Try This at Home: ARW Dutch Oven Desserts

Outdoor cooking is a beloved ARW tradition. Over the years, countless participants have gathered around Dutch ovens waiting for cobblers, cakes, and crisps to emerge from the coals. If you've ever wanted to bring a little ARW magic home, these two favorites are a great place to start.

🍒 Another Dump Cake

Ingredients:
1 can cherry pie filling
1 can pineapple chunks (with juice)
1 box yellow cake mix
1 cup butter (2 sticks), melted
1 cup coconut (optional)
1 cup nuts (optional)

Directions:
Preheat Dutch oven to 350°.
Spread cherry pie filling in the bottom of the Dutch oven.
Add pineapple chunks and juice.
Sprinkle cake mix evenly over fruit.
Pour melted butter over the top.
Add coconut and nuts if desired.
Bake approximately 1 hour.

🍎 Apple Crisp

Filling:
2 cans apple pie filling
½ cup chopped nuts

Topping:
1½ cups flour
1 cup oats
¼ tsp salt
½ tsp baking soda
1 tsp cinnamon
½ cup white sugar
½ cup brown sugar
12 Tbsp butter

Directions:
Pour apple pie filling into a 12-inch Dutch oven.
Mix dry topping ingredients together.
Cut in butter until crumbly.
Sprinkle topping over apples and add nuts.
Bake approximately 1 hour, placing most of the coals on top.

Dutch Oven Tips from the Campfire:

Line with heavy-duty foil. Cleanup is much easier, and desserts lift out beautifully.

Think "oven," not "fire." Dutch ovens bake best with coals underneath and on top, creating even heat all around.

Rotate as you bake. Turn the oven a quarter turn one direction and the lid a quarter turn the other every 15 minutes to prevent hot spots.

Most desserts need more heat on top than bottom. This helps toppings brown without burning the bottom.

Don't peek too often! Every time the lid comes off, heat escapes and baking time increases.

Serve warm with ice cream. This may not be an official Dutch oven rule, but ARW experience suggests it's a very good idea.

One of the reasons Dutch oven cooking has remained an ARW favorite is that it invites people to slow down. While dessert bakes, conversations happen. Stories are shared. New friendships are formed. Sometimes the best part isn't what comes out of the oven, but who gathers around it while they wait.
