We all know St Paul’s sits on a busy road and one thing we are all very familiar with is the sound of sirens. Fr Brian has written this prayer and invites us to pray it, silently or aloud, whenever we hear the sirens wail.

Keep watch, O God, over those who face perils and trials this day. Be with our first responders and those to whom they rush. May they for whom the sirens sound know your presence, your constant love and that our prayers are with them. Amen.

Are you hoping to explore and deepen your faith as a follower of Jesus? Do you want to know more about how the Bible, Christian Tradition, and Church History can help you discern how to use your gifts in ministry? Are you hoping to explore how your personal experiences and beliefs bring you closer to God and God’s people with a small group of 6-12 people, guided by an experienced Mentor?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, EfM (Education for Ministry) may be for you. Founded in 1975 by the School of Theology at the University of the South at Sewanee, EfM is a Christian Formation program, primarily for lay people. It is a four year program, with participants enrolling one year at a time. The Diocese of San Joaquin supports EfM which reduces tuition for participants to $350 yearly, with an additional $50-$100 for books (some books are available electronically).

Through study, prayer, worship and reflection, EfM groups gather both in person and online around the world to reflect, discern, and deepen their faith.

An in-person EfM group will be starting in September at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Modesto. The group will meet weekly through May, with the day and time to be determined. It will be mentored by Nancy Neufeld Silva, Ph.D., a parishioner at St. Paul’s. Dr. Silva has several years of experience as an EfM Mentor here in our diocese.
