Mount Olive Lutheran Church

In the presence of God. Being the presence of God. It’s rare to find a socially progressive church that keeps and cherishes traditional liturgy. We are human.

But that’s the blend that draws worshipers from a wide area to Mount Olive’s doorstep in Midtown Minneapolis. We describe ourselves as musical, liturgical and welcoming. By musical we mean to emphasize our reputation for congregational singing and organ playing. By liturgical we mean to identify ourselves with timeless rituals that are astonishingly powerful in today’s world. By welcoming we mean

to underscore our openness to all comers. We cannot imagine Christ’s church as an exclusionary body. Neither can we imagine the Christian life as a solely private relationship. And so, we are compelled to serve others, near and far. In our serving we are imperfect. We stumble. We have as many questions as answers. But we lean on God’s grace and on each other. And that seems to give our parish—now entering its second century—a lasting strength.

Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

The prophet Jeremiah speaks of the incurable wound of his suffering yet finds in God’s words the delight of his heart. When Peter doesn’t grasp Jesus’ words about suffering, Jesus tells the disciples they will find their lives in losing them. Such sacrificial love is described by Paul when he urges us to associate with the lowly and not repay evil with evil. In worship we gather as a community that we be strengthened in our faith and life in order to offer ourselves for the sake of our suffering world.

Thirteenth Sunday after Pentecost

In Isaiah the people are told to look to their spiritual ancestors as the rock from which they were hewn. Jesus declares that the church will be built on the rock of Peter’s bold confession of faith. God’s word of reconciliation and mercy are keys to the church’s mission, and the rock on which we live our lives. In this mercy, standing on this rock, we are free to hear Paul’s call to non conforming, sacrificial lives as Christ in the world.

Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

“Lord, save me.” One of the most ancient prayers is Peter’s cry today. Lord, save me. How many times in frightening moments have we not shouted or murmured this? How often have we, like Elijah, been tempted to hide ourselves away from our problems? Yet both Peter and Elijah find this wonder: in our deepest need, God comes to us and draws us out of doubt into faith, and sets us on our road again.

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

Today Jesus offers images from everyday life that reveal to us the reign of God. God’s reign is like a tree that becomes a safe and sheltering home, like yeast that penetrates and expands, like a treasured pearl, like a net that gains a great catch. Even as we seek the riches of God’s reign, the great surprise is that God’s grace finds us first!

Seventh Sunday after Pentecost

For the next three Sundays, the gospel readings invite us to picture a simple seed. Though small and seemingly insignificant, the seed contains its entire future within itself. With light and nourishment it will grow and prosper. So God brings flourishing life in us out of what might seem to us to be little, dormant, even dead. This is our faith’s central mystery: the dying and rising of Christ is our dying and rising. There is ground for hope here.

Fifth Sunday after Pentecost

Without God’s loving presence, we are a parched and waterless land. In the waters of baptism, Christ is our life-giving spring, quenching our thirst and pouring God’s love into our hearts. Today, Christ Jesus promises that the follower who gives a cup of cold water to any of God’s little ones serves Christ himself.

Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

In today’s gospel, Jesus encourages our discipleship: do not be afraid, for I am with you; tell others what you hear me say; give your life to the good news and you will discover the riches of life. Simple, yet Christ speaks it in an anxious and troubled world where it’s easier to be fearful than courageous, more common to look out for oneself than to care for the neighbor in need. Yet we do not fear, for we are God’s in Christ, and so we go and serve.

Third Sunday after Pentecost

In today’s gospel reading, Jesus speaks of the Church’s mission with images drawn from daily life. The harvest is already plentiful, he says, but laborers are needed for work in the fields of daily life. What are we to do? What the liturgy invites us to do: let our conversation be shaped by the good news, extend Christ’s peace wherever we find ourselves, and share our bread with the hungry.

Second Sunday after Pentecost

Today Jesus criticizes those who would be self-righteous and judge others, reminding us that mercy is to be at the heart of our religious practices, and our life of faith. God is found with those on the margins of society, like Matthew the tax collector or the hemorrhaging woman today. As we gather for worship, we who also are in need receive the healing that makes us well and sends us forth to be signs of God’s mercy for the world ourselves.

The Holy Trinity

Today’s second reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Here the Triune God is described through God’s work in the world and in the Church. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ, and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in Word and Sacrament, as we profess the creeds, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.
