Mount Olive Lutheran Church

Mount Olive Lutheran Church In the presence of God. Being the presence of God. It’s rare to find a socially progressive church that keeps and cherishes traditional liturgy. We are human.

But that’s the blend that draws worshipers from a wide area to Mount Olive’s doorstep in Midtown Minneapolis. We describe ourselves as musical, liturgical and welcoming. By musical we mean to emphasize our reputation for congregational singing and organ playing. By liturgical we mean to identify ourselves with timeless rituals that are astonishingly powerful in today’s world. By welcoming we mean

to underscore our openness to all comers. We cannot imagine Christ’s church as an exclusionary body. Neither can we imagine the Christian life as a solely private relationship. And so, we are compelled to serve others, near and far. In our serving we are imperfect. We stumble. We have as many questions as answers. But we lean on God’s grace and on each other. And that seems to give our parish—now entering its second century—a lasting strength.

The Holy Trinity

+ + +

Today’s second reading includes the apostolic greeting that begins the liturgy: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. Here the Triune God is described through God’s work in the world and in the Church. More than a doctrine, the Trinity expresses the heart of our faith: we have experienced the God of creation made known in Jesus Christ, and with us always through the Holy Spirit. We celebrate the mystery of the Holy Trinity in Word and Sacrament, as we profess the creeds, and as we are sent into the world to bear witness to our faith.

Day of Pentecost

+ + +

Today’s festival gets its name from the Jewish festival of Pentecost, observed fifty days after Passover, and the day the Spirit came upon the believers in Jerusalem. Fifty days after Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit as the power of God among us that heals, forgives, inspires, unites, and empowers us to go out as those first disciples into the world. In the one Spirit we are baptized into one body, and at the Lord’s table the Spirit unites us and sends us for witness in the world.

Seventh Sunday of Easter

+ + +

In these days between Ascension and Pentecost, we gather with the disciples in the upper room, waiting for the Spirit to transform the church around the world. In today’s Gospel Jesus prays for his followers and for their mission in his name. Amid religious, social, and economic divisions, we seek the unity that Jesus had with his Father. Made one in baptism, we go forth to live our faith in the world, eager for the unity that God intends for the whole human family.

Sixth Sunday of Easter

+ + +

Jesus does not leave his followers orphaned. Through the Holy Spirit Jesus comes to abide with his disciples of every generation. As Pentecost draws near, we are reminded that the risen Christ dwells in us as the Spirit of truth. We receive this Spirit in baptism and pray that in our gathering around the Lord’s table the Spirit will transform us to be the body of the risen Christ in the world.

Fifth Sunday of Easter

+ + +

As we continue to celebrate the fifty days of Easter, today’s Gospel includes Jesus’ promise that he goes to prepare a place for his followers in his Father’s house. In the meantime, our baptism commissions us to share Jesus’ mission in and to the world. As First Peter reminds us, we are a holy people, called to proclaim the one who called us out of darkness into light. In words and deeds we bear witness to the risen Christ—our way, our truth, our life.

Fourth Sunday of Easter

+ + +

Jesus calls himself the “gate” of the sheep in today’s gospel and also the gatekeeper, the shepherd. As the gate, our risen Lord is our protector in a frightening and often dangerous world. But even in the familiar words of Psalm 23, our Good Shepherd guides us not out of this world into a protected sheepfold, but out and in and through it. And always with guiding staff, overflowing cup, and gracious presence and care.

Third Sunday of Easter

+ + +

Today’s gospel begins with two disciples walking to Emmaus, overcome with sadness, loss, and disappointment. They had hoped Jesus, who was crucified, would be the one to redeem Israel! Yet the risen Christ walks with them, opens the Scriptures to them, making their hearts aflame, and then opens their eyes to see him in the breaking of the bread. The story of Emmaus is the story of our worship and our lives!

Second Sunday of Easter

+ + +

Blessed are those who believe without seeing, Jesus tells Thomas, tells us. Breaking through locked doors of fear and anxiety, Jesus comes with the gift of peace, the gift of his presence among us, and the gift of the Holy Spirit. With these gifts, the disciples were emboldened to proclaim the Good News of the resurrection in the world, despite threats of imprisonment and punishment. So it is with we who meet the risen Lord Jesus here and are filled with the same gifts.
