"The Four Fundamental Attributes of Allah"

Lord of All the Worlds (Rabbil 'Aalameen)

One attribute of Allah is that He is Lord of all the worlds, that is to
say, He takes the entire cosmos, through gradual progress, from an
inferior state to a superior state. This takes place without any preference
to any race or creed. This attribute negates all national and racial
distinctions. The sun, moon, stars, clouds, rain, rivers and seas, are for
everyone. Similarly, prophethood, dreams, visions, revelation and
means of spiritual development were and are for all. This shows that
Allah’s blessing of revelation has been bestowed on all nations and
people.

The Gracious (Rahman)

He is also Gracious, in that all the arrangement essential to human
progress were in place even before we came into being. The earth was
created with all manner of qualities and strengths. The heavenly bodies
were created with varied qualities, capacities and forces. Milk was put
in mothers’ breasts. Humans were given all sorts of powers; sight,
hearing and speech were given to us. The sense of smell and taste was
given. The sense of touch and intellect was given. In short all sorts of
faculties were given. The air was created, as were water and grain.
Animals were made for man’s varied usage. Infinite deposits for man’s
progress were created from the beginning.

Merciful (Raheem)

Another attribute of Allah is that He is Merciful, in that He rewards
us for our good deeds in the best possible way with excellent results. He
compensates for our minimal and limited deeds in a most generous and
boundless way.

Master of the Day of Judgment (Maaliki Yawmid-Deen)

Another attribute of Allah is that He is Master of the Day of
Judgment. He is the Master of the time of the reward and punishment of
our actions. If He so pleases, He can give us an appropriate punishment
of our sins and He can indeed pardon us and reward us as much as He
pleases for our good deeds. He does not conform to an obligatory
punishment of each sin and in an exact way and indeed to an adequate
reward of virtues—if He so pleases, He can reward as much as He
pleases.

"The Lasting Impressions of Jalsa Salana"

Impressions of Guests from Around the World

His Holiness(aba) began presenting the views of various guests and dignitaries from around the world who attended the Jalsa. For example, a minister from The Gambia said that seeing the Jalsa led him to a deep-rooted realisation that this grand event is rooted in selfless service and silent, unshakeable sacrifice. His heart was moved that such a large-scale event began from a small event in Qadian, attended by 75 people initially, and has now turned into a global event attended by tens of thousands. He was also surprised that such a large event did not require any police presence, yet all the arrangements were tended to by volunteers who were professionals in their fields, whether engineers or doctors. He was moved by the sights and sounds of the International Bai’at ceremony, where he saw a strong human chain connected to the Khalifah of the Time. He expressed that he is convinced that the Ahmadiyya Community’s success is not due to any worldly means but as a result of its righteousness.

His Holiness(aba) said that a former governor from Senegal said that what impressed him the most about the Jalsa was the organisation of the event. The volunteers were kind and always available. He listened to all the speeches attentively, and he appreciated the various language translations that were available. The main message that he took away was love, peace and brotherhood.

His Holiness(aba) said that a lawyer from Luxembourg said that the three days of Jalsa have become some of the most important days of his life. He had never attended such a large-scale event, and that too organised by volunteers. It seemed to him that the attendees were all part of one family. Every volunteer worked with a smile on their face and served everyone as if they were the most important person at the event. He was also moved by the sight of the International Bai’at and seeing everyone pledge allegiance at the hand of the Khalifah of the Time. He was also able to meet His Holiness(aba). Though he was nervous at first, those nerves went away. He had some things he wanted to say but couldn’t bring himself to say the words, yet the Khalifah of the Time somehow touched on those very points himself.

His Holiness(aba) said that a new convert to Ahmadiyyat who used to be a Christian said that he had always been told that faith and music were intricately linked. However, he never felt a connection to faith through music. After becoming a Muslim, he began offering prayer, but he was unable to develop fervency. When he took part in the International Bai’at ceremony, he was finally moved to fervent prayers and felt as though he was able to develop a spiritual connection with God in that moment. This feeling persisted in the prayer that took place after the International Bai’at. He was so entranced and moved by this that as he left the Jalsa hall he didn’t even realise that he had forgotten to put his shoes on. A volunteer saw that he did not have any shoes on and so he offered him his own shoes, which also moved him a great deal.

His Holiness(aba) said that a professor from the Czech Republic said that he cannot express his true sentiments about the Jalsa into words and said that he would go back and tell his colleagues and students that this is a spiritually moving event that they must experience for themselves. He was very pleased to meet the Ahmadis and was pleased to see how a belief was bringing together people from all over the world in a bond of love and brotherhood. After the address of the Khalifah, he said that he gained a deeper understanding of Islam and righteousness.

His Holiness(aba) said that a professor of law from the United States said that he has attended various conventions around the world, but the Jalsa Salana UK stands in a category of its own. He met people from over a hundred countries. He said that the peaceful and loving atmosphere was truly unique. He appreciated the various exhibitions and was moved to see high-level professionals in various fields rendering volunteer service for the Jalsa.

His Holiness(aba) said that a professor from the Philippines who accepted Islam after having been a Christian said that even though the attendance was over 50,000, upon seeing the scale and scope of the Jalsa, the event felt even larger to him. He was moved and amazed by the work of the volunteers who gave life to a temporary city and provided all the necessary means and requirements. He was inspired to see the volunteers working with such humility, a quality that can bring about a great change in society. He was also happy to see the great responsibility with which young children were working. He came to learn that Chaudhry Zafrulla Khan was an Ahmadi, and he learned about the achievements of Dr Abdus Salam.

His Holiness(aba) said that a representative of El Salvador in the Central American Parliament also attended Jalsa Salana UK for the first time. His main takeaway was how we should live our daily lives, likening it to a branch that dries up when separated from the tree because the tree gives it life. In the same way, if we separate from God, then we too will become lifeless. He also appreciated His Holiness’(aba) guidance in his addresses regarding martial peace as well. Upon meeting His Holiness(aba), he realised that His Holiness(aba) is truly well acquainted with his community all around the world.

His Holiness(aba) said that the Bulgarian Secretary General of Labour and Social Policy attended the Jalsa Salana UK and was impacted by the extraordinary scope of the Jalsa site and the temporary city that was created. He found the speeches during the Jalsa intellectually stimulating and very informative. He was also moved by the various exhibitions, which he thought were excellently presented.

His Holiness(aba) said that a professor from Kosovo, renowned for his academic standing and achievements, also attended the Jalsa. He said he saw a practical image of respect and organisation in every department, which was truly worth appreciating. He was met by everyone with heartfelt and joyful hospitality, which left a great and positive impact upon him. In this era, when there are so many misconceptions about religion in various parts of the world, the message delivered by His Holiness(aba) in his speech proved extremely timely and beneficial.

His Holiness(aba) said that a journalist from Bolivia also attended the Jalsa and described it as an amazing experience. He was moved by the speeches delivered by His Holiness(aba). He said that this event would remain imprinted upon his heart forever and was such that could lead to recognising God. He said that this event dispels the age-old notion that Islam oppresses women. Indeed, this event shows how Islam honours, respects and empowers women.

His Holiness(aba) said that the Editor-in-Chief of the most prominent national newspaper said that when he initially proposed the idea to his newspaper of attending this event, he was told to reconsider his decision. However, upon attending the Jalsa, he came to learn that it was an image of peace and harmony. Although he is Catholic himself, he said that he truly appreciated the address delivered by His Holiness(aba), which spoke about the essence of righteousness, and that this address increased his knowledge on the subject.

His Holiness(aba) said that a guest from Lithuania said that upon remaining amongst Muslims during this Jalsa, she came to learn a great deal. After hearing His Holiness’(aba) address to the ladies, her misconceptions about women in Islam were removed, and she came to learn the respect, honour and care that Islam gives to women.

His Holiness(aba) said that a guest from Canada belonging to the First Nations said that the organisation of the Jalsa was excellent and every volunteer was working to their full potential. It is not easy to run such a large-scale event, but it was impressive to see the manner in which it was done by volunteers.

His Holiness(aba) said that a journalist from Belgium said that though he had attended the Jalsa in previous years, he was particularly impressed by His Holiness’(aba) address to the ladies, in which he advised not only to obtain religious knowledge but secular knowledge as well and encouraged them to excel in every field.

The Prophet's (saw) Gratitude to God and His Teachings on Thankfulness

Gratitude, Patience & Prayer’

After reciting Tashahhud, Ta‘awwuz and Surah al-Fatihah, His Holiness, Hazrat Mirza Masroor Ahmad(aba), said that before creating humankind, God created countless bounties for its sake. This grace of God certainly warrants that man be grateful to Him. Every prophet has guided their people to be grateful servants to their Lord. The greatest example of this gratitude was none other than the Holy Prophet(sa), who exhibited gratitude to God through his every action.

His Holiness(aba) said that when the Holy Prophet(sa) was asked why he prayed so fervently to God when God had already promised him every sort of success and victory, he replied, ‘Should I not be a grateful servant to my Lord?’ Not only did the Holy Prophet(sa) himself practice gratitude to God, but he enjoined the same to his followers as well.

Patience Leads to Gratitude

His Holiness(aba) said that once, the Holy Prophet(sa) said that faith is divided into two parts: patience and gratitude. Indeed, patience gives rise to gratitude, and so in essence faith wholly comprises gratitude. Once, the Holy Prophet(sa) said that a believer has nothing but good fortune: if a believer experiences something positive, they are grateful, and this is good for them. And if they experience some sort of difficulty, then a believer exhibits patience, and this too is good for them, for God says, ‘Surely, Allah is with the steadfast’, and He says, ‘Give glad tidings to the patient’. Thus, what greater good can there be than to be given glad tidings by God? This can all be achieved when one is a grateful servant to God.

His Holiness(aba) said that the Holy Prophet(sa) said that one who is not grateful to other people cannot be grateful to God. When the habit of gratitude pervades, it gives rise to a beautiful society; the very society that the Holy Prophet(sa) sought to bring about through Islam. On one occasion, the Holy Prophet(sa) said that a person who is unable to be grateful for something small cannot then be grateful for something big; and those who are not grateful to other people are not grateful to God. Ruminating on the blessings of God is also a form of gratitude, and not speaking about His bounties is a form of ungratefulness. The Holy Prophet(sa) said that being part of a community is a blessing and being divided is a form of torment

Attributing Our Success to God Alone

His Holiness(aba) said that there was a person whom the Holy Prophet(sa) would meet and ask how he was doing, to which the man would reply saying that he was very well and that he praised God, upon which the Holy Prophet(sa) would pray for him. One day, when the Holy Prophet(sa) asked him the same question, the man gave a different reply, saying that he was well as long as he remained grateful. Upon hearing this, the Holy Prophet(sa) remained silent. When asked why he remained silent, the Holy Prophet(sa) said that it was because the man had expressed doubt in God by saying that he was only doing well if he had something to be grateful about, as if to say that there may be times when there is nothing for him to be grateful about. The Holy Prophet(sa) could not bear to hear anything that expressed even inadvertent ingratitude to God.

His Holiness(aba) said that if someone received a favour and they say Jazakallah Khair or ‘May Allah give you the best reward’, then they have done justice to showing gratitude. Similarly, when God wishes to bless a nation, He grants them a long life and the ability to show gratitude. Thus, for any nation or community to thrive and succeed, it must show gratitude.

The Importance of Showing Gratitude to People

His Holiness(aba) said that the Holy Prophet(sa) once said to his wife Hazrat A’ishah(ra) that he had been informed by the Angel Gabriel that on the Day of Judgement, God would ask His servant whether he had shown gratitude to a person who had done a favour for him. Upon this, the servant would say that he knew that, in reality, the favour had originated from God, so he thanked God instead. In reply, God would say that if one did not show gratitude to His servant, then he had not shown gratitude to God. This is the profound teaching of Islam, which brings about a beautiful society.

His Holiness(aba) said that once the Holy Prophet(sa) said that if a person prays in the morning, ‘O God, whatever blessing I have received this morning is from You. You are One and have no partner, and all praise and gratitude are for You,’ then it is as though that person has spent the entire day in gratitude. And one who offers the same prayer at night before going to sleep, then it is as though they have spent the entire night in gratitude. Similarly, the Holy Prophet(sa) taught the prayer, ‘O Allah, make me someone who is extremely grateful to You and remembers You a great deal, follows Your guidance and remembers Your commands.’ If one constantly prays this, then they would be saved from ill thoughts and practices.

Being Thankful in Every Aspect of Life

His Holiness(aba) said that the Holy Prophet(sa) would show gratitude in every aspect of his life, even in the most minuscule of matters. For example, after having answered the call of nature, the Holy Prophet(sa) would pray, ‘All praise belongs to Allah, Who removed from me that which was harmful and granted me health.’ Similarly, if ever the Holy Prophet(sa) saw his reflection, he would pray, ‘All praise belongs to Allah Who created me a good appearance and good morals and made beautiful in me that which is perceived to be faults in others.’ Similarly, the Holy Prophet(sa) would pray prayers of gratitude before eating and after eating, before sleeping and upon waking up.

His Holiness(aba) said that the Holy Prophet(sa) taught that expressing the bounties of God is also a form of gratitude. For example, once someone met the Holy Prophet(sa) whilst wearing tattered clothes. The Holy Prophet(sa) asked the man whether God had bestowed any wealth upon him. The man replied that God had indeed bestowed upon him wealth and enumerated the various types of wealth he possessed. The Holy Prophet(sa) said that when God had blessed him with wealth, then it should be evident from the manner in which he presented himself. In other words, he should not wear tattered clothes but should wear nice and clean clothes, as an expression of gratitude to God for the bounties He had bestowed.

The Holy Prophet(sa) taught that an arrogant person does not enter paradise. Someone asked the Holy Prophet(sa) about those who wish to wear nice things. The Holy Prophet(sa) responded by saying, ‘Allah is beautiful, and He loves beauty.’ The Holy Prophet(sa) went on to explain that arrogance denotes that one usurps the rights of others because they think themselves to be better than others while deeming others to be lowly. Thus, wearing nice clothes and using that as a reason to deprive others of their rights is arrogance. Otherwise, there is nothing wrong with wearing nice clothes whilst remaining kind to others and fulfilling their due rights.

His Holiness(aba) said that the Holy Prophet(sa) would also show gratitude during battle. For example, during the Battle of Badr, when the Holy Prophet(sa) was informed that Abu Jahl had been defeated and killed, the Holy Prophet(sa) confirmed the news three times, upon which he fell into prostration before God in gratitude. Similarly, on the occasion of the Conquest of Makkah, the Holy Prophet(sa) thanked God for fulfilling His promise of victory.

His Holiness(aba) said that the Holy Prophet(sa) showed gratitude during his farewell pilgrimage, when going back and forth between mounts Safa and Marwa, when he praised God and gave all glory and thanks to Him. Once, when an entire tribe accepted Islam, the Holy Prophet(sa) fell into prostration to thank God. Indeed, whenever the Holy Prophet(sa) received any happy news, the Holy Prophet(sa) would fall into prostration to thank God.

How to Develop Gratitude in Life

His Holiness(aba) said that the Holy Prophet(sa) said that if a person possesses the following two qualities, then God considers them to be patient and grateful. The two qualities are that when it comes to matters of faith, one looks towards those who are above them, and secondly, when it comes to worldly matters, one looks towards those who are less fortunate than them and glorifies God for what He has granted them. Similarly, the Holy Prophet(sa) said that if a person is granted the following four qualities, it is as though they have been granted good in this world and the hereafter: a grateful heart, a tongue that remembers God, a body that patiently endures hardships, and a good and honest wife.

His Holiness(aba) prayed that may Allah enable everyone to follow the guidance and practice of the Holy Prophet(sa).

Prayers for the Success of the Annual Convention

His Holiness(aba) said that next week, the Jalsa Salana (Annual Convention) of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community UK is commencing. His Holiness(aba) prayed that may the event prove successful in every respect. May Allah protect everyone, especially from the impacts of the extreme heat. Many volunteers have to perform their duties in the heat as well; may Allah enable them to perform their duties in the best possible manner.
