In 1858, in Lourdes, France, the Virgin Mary appeared 18 times to 14-year-old peasant girl St. Bernadette Soubirous in the Massabielle grotto. Mary, appearing in white with a blue sash, called for prayer and penance. She instructed Bernadette to dig for a spring, which became a source of miraculous healing.
