PLASTIC RECYCLING TIP: CRUSH IT!

Our plastic recycling bins at Smith’s and Walmart are serviced multiple times each week, but air-filled bottles and bulky items can cause containers to fill much faster than necessary.
A quick squeeze or stomp before tossing plastics into the bin helps create more space for everyone.

BEST PRACTICES FOR PLASTIC RECYCLING:
• Crush plastic bottles and jugs when possible
• Empty liquids before recycling
• Keep trash and cardboard out of plastic bins
• Don’t bag recyclables — loose items work best

One crushed bottle can save the space of several uncrushed ones. Small effort. Big impact.

Thank you for helping keep Mesquite’s recycling sites cleaner, safer, and available for the whole community.

IMPORTANT SAFETY NOTICE – LITHIUM BATTERIES IN TRASH

Today we experienced another “hot load” 🔥—a situation where a load of trash begins to smolder or catch fire, most commonly caused by improperly disposed lithium-ion batteries.

We want to recognize one of our drivers who noticed the smell of something burning while on route and immediately took action. He safely discharged the load at the nearest location that did not put any homes or property at risk. That quick decision prevented what could have become a serious fire.

We also want to give credit to our yard team, who were on scene within minutes, contained the situation, and had everything cleaned up quickly and efficiently. This effort was supported by the City of Mesquite Streets Department, who assisted due to the proximity to their equipment yard. Strong teamwork across the board.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Lithium-ion batteries (found in phones, tools, vapes, toys, etc.) are a major fire hazard when placed in regular trash. When compacted inside garbage trucks, they can ignite and create dangerous situations for:

-Drivers
-The public
-Property and equipment

PROPER DISPOSAL

Do not place lithium-ion batteries in your trash.
These items should be taken to the landfill, where we have a designated disposal area specifically for lithium batteries:

Landfill Location: 3200 Mesquite Heights Rd

Proper disposal is critical to preventing incidents like this and protecting our community. We appreciate everyone doing their part.

The dancers in our community are some hard workers! The VVHS Dance Team is a regular at our landfill cleanup fundraisers and always does a fantastic job. This past weekend, Grace Valley Dance brought their younger dancers and family members out to the landfill for a cleanup fundraiser as they prepare for their upcoming event at Disneyland in February. The dancers around here don’t just shine on stage, they shine at cleanups too!
