Thought For Today: “Death with No Regret”

It’s a great thing to die full. This is the assessment of the Bible’s account of Abraham’s death. Genesis 25:8 says Abraham died at a good old age, full of years.

Now, the words “of years” are not in the Hebrew manuscript; therefore, while Abraham died of old age, he also died full.

Abraham was a friend of God (James 2:23) and lived by faith (Hebrews 11:8-10). His faith was “accounted to him for righteousness” (Romans 4:22). Because of this, Abraham was full when he died.

What humanity counts as gain is what they are emptied of at death, namely wealth, possessions, and prestige. But those who live by faith in Jesus Christ carry their fullness with them.

To Martha, who was grieving her brother Lazarus’s death, Jesus said, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:25-26)

This Sunday Morning we’ll be looking at “Obtaining a Living Hope” in our Unprecedented Hope series.

A Scripture and a Prayer: “A Worthy Race”

“Do you not know that those who run in a race all run, but only one receives the prize? Run in such a way that you may win … Now they do it to obtain a perishable crown, but we for an imperishable crown. (1 Corinthians 9:24, 25b)

Prayer:

Lord, whether we like to acknowledge it or not, we are in a race, not against others, but a race to finish well in this life we are living in You and to cross the finish line, which is heaven and Your presence. Therefore, we pray for Your power, the power of the Holy Spirit, to help us live in a way that is pleasing to You, that is, to live by faith in You, not in what we see or feel, so that when we reach the finish line we can hear You speak the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant.” Help us, therefore, to live our lives in spirit and in truth, and in the end, as others see us and the way we live for You, may they desire You as well and give You all praise and glory. And this I ask in Jesus’s name. AMEN

Weekly Blessing from the Bible

This week’s blessing comes from Psalm 103:2-5 - “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits: who forgives all your iniquities, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from destruction, who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies, who satisfies your mouth with good things.”

We just finished our “Unprecedented Faith” series. Now we’ll be looking at our next series on “Unprecedented Hope.” To start this series, we’ll focus on how to create an environment of hope, because hope is the one thing we need most, and we can never truly be alive without it.

Week 33 Transformational Challenge

Scripture Reading

Ezekiel 36:26 – “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; I will take the heart of stone out of your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.”

Reflection

First, the Lord is talking about a heart transplant, but not a physical transplant, but a spiritual one. The heart is more than a bodily organ that pumps life-giving blood to the rest of the body. The heart is symbolic of all that it means to be human.

God also wants to put a new spirit inside of us. God gives us the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of power. In the Old Testament, that word for Spirit is “ruach,” which means wind or breath. The Holy Spirit, therefore, is the breath of God.

The new spirit begins when we come to faith in Jesus Christ. This is seen when the disciples encountered the risen Jesus. It says Jesus breathed on them; that is the very breath of God, the Holy Spirit, saying, “Receive the Holy Spirit.” (John 20:22)

The beauty of the promise given by God through Ezekiel is that we’ve been given a new heart and a new spirit, that is, God’s word written on our hearts, and the Holy Spirit being placed within us.

Prayer and Contemplation

Reflect on what the Bible teaches, meditate on it, and ask yourself, “How am I doing?” Then listen to what God is saying and let the Holy Spirit guide you in following it.

Today’s Devotional: “The Art of Ending Well”

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow said, “Great is the art of beginning, but greater is the art of ending.”

We often think of discipline or self-control as an enemy or an unwanted guest, when in reality it is our friend because it enables us to be the best we can be.

Surveys have found that people who exercise self-control are much happier and healthier than those who don’t.

The Bible has some interesting consequences for those without self-control.

Uncontrolled anger leads to punishment, cruelty, harsh words, and strife (Job 5:2; Proverbs 27:4; Ephesians 4:31; Proverbs 29:22). Uncontrolled lust makes a person prey to their lust (Proverbs 6:26). Uncontrolled spending destroys a person’s treasures (Proverbs 21:20). Uncontrolled drinking brings sorrows, contentions, complaints, and wounds (Proverbs 23). Uncontrolled ambition dulls a person’s ability to discern and understand and takes away gains (Proverbs 23:4-5). Uncontrolled eating is like putting a knife to your throat (Proverbs 23:1-3).

Self-control comes from two Greek words meaning to have fixed power or strength, or to have the power to stay in one place. The idea is to get a hold or grip on something. Literally, it’s to get your hands on something until you’re in control of it rather than it being in control of you.

Far too often, we’re ruled by our emotions as well as our wants and desires. Instead, those outside the faith need to see Christians who demonstrate self-control in their personal walk. That means we don’t allow the appetites of the flesh or our lusts to dominate our lives.

How can we accomplish this? It’s by giving the Holy Spirit complete control of our lives, so we are then God-controlled, not self-controlled.

The Apostle Paul said, “Everyone who competes for the prize is temperate (self-controlled) in all things … (Therefore) I discipline my body and bring it into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified” (1 Corinthians 9:24-27).
