Early this morning we experienced a major water line break on Flat Top Mesa that caused significant water loss and system damage. This occurred on a roadway, so as our team scrambled to get the leak repaired and the surrounding community back in water, issues arose with traffic. Enter the City of Mesquite Streets Department, who did what they do best, quickly diverting traffic around the area so our team could do what they do best.
We appreciate their assistance and can't thank them enough! Shoutout to the Streets Department!

Congratulations to Annie Neavill from Colonial Property Management and Matt Woods with Star 1 Landscaping our Water Saving Heroes for the month of May 2026! They worked together to find and fix a leak that had been hiding under ground. This was not an easy task, since the water lines ran under concrete as well. We love the tenacity and commitment to conserving this precious resource! Thank you Annie and Matt! You are Water Saving Heroes!
Know someone who is a Water Saving Hero? Nominate them for our next monthly award! We want to recognize businesses, HOA’s or individuals who do something outstanding to save water! It could be fixing a big leak quickly, or a small leak that builds over time, a turf conversion, conservation education, or simply some great desert landscaping! If you do anything to help us save water, you’re a hero! Contact Natalie at VVWD: 702-346-5731 or [email protected] to nominate.

Take advantage of the upcoming long weekend by upgrading your landscape. Choose native plants. Add mulch to flower beds and around trees to reduce evaporation and allow soil to retain water longer, requiring less frequent watering. Check your irrigation timers and adjust to your plant's needs.

Mrs. Bingham's Sixth Grade English Students at Hughes Middle School recently read the book "A Long Walk to Water" by Linda Sue Park, which is the true story of Salva Dut, a boy from Sudan, where in 1985 civil war was raging, forcing thousands of young boys to flee the country, finding refuge first in Ethiopia and then Kenya. Some, including Salva were eventually adopted in the US. 19 years later, after finding out that his father was still alive, but gravely ill, he returned to his country and discovered that water-borne illnesses had ravaged his loved ones. He vowed to make a difference and eventually formed the non-profit Water for South Sudan, which drills water wells in communities, saving lives and greatly improving the quality of those lives.

After reading the book, the class spent a day talking about the importance of clean water in our lives and learned how fortunate we are to live in a place where plentiful, clean water is not a worry. They then designed posters to display in the VVWD office during Drinking Water Week! They did an amazing job and hopefully will remember not to take this precious resource for granted.
