THE WORD FOR THE WEEK FROM THE WORD

LUKE 2:40

A Sunday School teacher asked me what the definition of wisdom was. I responded, “applied knowledge.” We read books, go to school, live our lives, and listen to lectures most of our lives. We are very well educated, not sure how smart, but we have a lot of book learning. How would you grade our wisdom? The word for the week from the Word is “grew in wisdom.” It may be hard to imagine God growing in wisdom, but when He became an infant, He emptied Himself and became vulnerable, and had to learn wisdom on our level. Another translation says He was filled with wisdom.

I like that He grew in wisdom. That gives me hope that I/we can grow in our applied knowledge. It’s not just wasted education. On the other hand, I like that He was filled with wisdom. Wisdom dominated His total being. All that He thought was governed by wisdom, all that He did was led by wisdom. The book of James tells us that if we lack wisdom to ask God and He will give it to us. What are you asking for? Pray for our leaders to be filled with wisdom from God.

THE WORD FOR THE WEEK FROM THE WORD

MARK 15:40

Several months ago, I suddenly realized I couldn’t read the street signs. It seemed like it had just happened. I started asking Beth what the sign said at the next intersection. Her response was, “Do you want me to drive?” Naturally, I said no. I thought it must be poor lighting, smog, or a dirty windshield. As my condition got worse, I finally had to admit it was me. I had cataracts. Something had to be done. After visiting a doctor and having surgery, I can see clearly now. But for a while, I couldn’t see things correctly in the distance. The word for the week from the Word is“watching from a distance.”

In the story, the women were watching from a distance to see where Jesus was being buried. But there are some applications we can see in this story. One is that we may not see all the details from a distance. Do you really know what you really saw? The other one I see is that the women didn’t want to get involved in this event. Often, we sit back and don’t get involved. We don’t want to take a chance, we don’t want to risk, we don’t want to take a stand, or we don’t want to pay the price. Whatever our reasons may be, we can’t make a difference at a distance.
