I made a commitment to become a monk. Well… sort of.

This month at the Abbey of Gethsemani, I made my commitment as a Lay Cistercian.

Before you picture me giving away all my possessions and disappearing into a monastery, that’s not exactly how this works.

I still have a husband, my boys, a job, a mortgage, a smartphone, and a very full life.

But I am choosing to learn from a tradition that has spent nearly 1,000 years asking one simple question:

How do we stay connected to God in a distracted world?

The monks have an answer that feels surprisingly relevant: slow down, pray, embrace silence, practice solitude, and pay attention.

The more time I spend with this community, the more I realize that many of us aren’t exhausted because we’re doing too much. We’re exhausted because we’ve forgotten how to be still.

That’s one reason we’re developing Live Like a Monk Days at City Retreat Memphis.

No vows. No habits. No monastery required.

Just a day to step away from the noise, practice ancient rhythms, and create space to encounter God.

It turns out the wisdom of the monks may be exactly what our busy modern lives are missing.
