The Bible can seem outdated, unwieldy, and downright difficult to make sense of. It’s not difficult to look out into the past or present to see it utilized as a tool for causing pain too.

How do you make sense of the Bible? What questions does it raise in you? What about the parts that resonate? What about the parts that grate against your sensibilities? What does the Bible tell us about God? The original authors or audiences? What does one do with these difficult questions?

That’s where Rev. Sandy shines. The Rector’s Bible study happens every Thursday morning at 10am. Join Sandy, and many others, as we dive deep into Holy Scripture, sharing our curiosities with one another and growing deeper in faith.

Dinner with strangers can go a lot of ways. 😬🍴

Someone brings up politics. Someone tells a story that somehow lasts 27 minutes. Nobody knows what to say next. Someone throws a fork.

Okay… hopefully not that last one.

The truth is, meeting new people can feel awkward. But it can also be the beginning of something really good.

That’s the idea behind Supper Club.

You’ll be placed in a group of 6–8 people in a similar age and stage of life, and once a month you’ll gather around a table to share a meal, have a conversation, and get to know some of the people you may already recognize from across the church.

No program. No homework. No pressure to be impressive.

Just dinner.

Because sometimes the difference between recognizing someone on Sunday morning and actually knowing them is simply sitting down at the same table.

Some places stay with us. And their influence ripples outward.

In 2016, the Rev. Christina Salzer spent a summer with the Sisters of the Community of St. Mary, Southern Province, through their Organic Prayer Program, living within a rhythm of prayer, work, study, rest, community, and care for creation. This is the same community founded by the Sisters who established St. Mary's Episcopal School and for whom St Mary's Cathedral Memphis is named.

Ten years later, Christina returned to that same community for a meaningful new chapter: she was received as an Associate of the Community of St. Mary.

Associates commit themselves to a personal Rule of Life: an intentional way of loving God, loving their neighbors, caring for themselves, and caring for creation.

For Christina, this is more than a new affiliation. It is the continuation of a relationship that helped form her years ago and continues to shape the way she lives, serves, and ministers today.

Her priestly work helping YOU find and experience a sacred presence in the center of Memphis is supported by the rhythms and practices she first learned with those Sisters.

We are grateful for the communities that form us, the practices that root us, and the ways God continues to work through relationships planted long ago.

An uncharacteristically harsh rebuke from Jesus, but what does it mean?

While away at the lake with his disciples, taking a break from the challenging work of spreading the message of the Kingdom of God, Peter imagines that it would be possible to stay here forever.

Its an easy notion to succomb to. Vacation is nice. A break from it all is important. But purpose is important. Jesus' purpose for his disciples and for himself, was not a life of reflection by the lake.

It was to free captives, preach good news to the poor, and forgiveness to sinners. It was to welcome outsiders and share the good news of God's kingdom.

It meant there will difficult days ahead. Knowing this, Peter was tempted to stay at the lake. But their work, like ours, is “in the city.”

Not necessarily a literal city, but a metaphorical place where there are poor to care for, strangers to show hospitality to, sick to support, and sufferers who need to feel encouraged.

Tables are holy places.

On Sundays, the Rev. Sarah Cowan helps gather us around the altar. During the week, you might find her in other parish life activities. Last week she was in our kitchen, helping prepare food for our neighbors through Recover Food Feed Hope.

Because feeding people, regardless of the table, is sacred work.

It happens with bread and wine. It happens with donated food, chopping boards, takeout containers, and willing hands. And it happens when we decide that caring for our neighbors experiencing food insecurity is something we do.

Why simply announce that there will be a fire drill, when you can parody a scene from one of your favorite TV shows of the early 2000s?

This is certainly a fire drill announcement that even Tobias Fünke would be proud of!

Fire Drills | Sunday, August 30 | 9:15 & 10:30 a.m.|

On Sunday, August 30, we will hold two fire drills: one for children and youth during the 9:15 a.m. formation hour and a second at the end of the 10:30 a.m. service.

These drills will be simple practice exercises to help us prepare for an unlikely evacuation scenario. All leaders and participants will receive instruction prior to the drills. Your feedback on this experience will be important!

Did you miss the service?

This past weekend we enjoyed the presence of 6 newborns who were baptized. While some may experience these children as distractions from worship, we believe they are a sacred part of our worship services!

The children were vocal throughout the service, especially the Rev. Sarah Cowan's sermon, drawing laughter and sparking joy!

As Fr. Sandy remarked at the beginning of the service, children being baptized is a sign of vitality and growth at Church of the Holy Communion.

Whether you've got kids or not, we'd like to invite you to share in that spiritual vitality and growth.
