Martin Luther’s “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God” was known as the Battle Hymn of the Reformation because it captured the courage and conviction of a movement standing upon the authority of God’s Word against overwhelming opposition. It was inspired by the truths of Psalm 46 during a time of persecution and uncertainty, Luther proclaimed that though earthly powers rage, Satan attacks, and everything we possess may be taken from us, “God’s truth abideth still; His kingdom is forever.” It became an anthem for the Reformers because it declared their confidence that kings, popes, councils, and devils may oppose Christ—but the Word of God cannot be overthrown, and the Kingdom of Christ will endure.
