Located in the heartland of Central Illinois,
Providence Church (formerly known as First General Baptist Church of Mattoon)
is a community of believers that hold true to God's word and His teachings. The church was founded in 1954 and for over 60 years now, we have been passionate about serving our community by being a witness to others, teaching and preaching the Good News and wanting to see tr

ansformation in peoples lives. In a city of over 18,000 residents, Providence still has that "small town church" atmosphere that tends to get lost in the big production setups of today, yet we are a dynamic church with a mix of people from all walks of life. If you are new to Providence, no worries. We understand that a new church can be intimidating and uncomfortable. We have members that would love to help you understand more of who we are and make it their duty to see that you are taken care of.​

Requesting prayer for Lance's healing and wisdom for his care team. As of this Sunday evening he is hospitalized at SBLHC. He has some post surgery issues. Prayer for rest for both of us is also appreciated. We love our church family.

We are keeping a close eye on the weather for tomorrow's outdoor service. If needed we can still hold services in the pavilion, but if the weather looks more treacherous, we will head back to the church. Either way, we will fellowship and praise the Lord! 😁

There has been some confusion on the potluck part of Church in the Park. Here are ALL of the details you need to know! PLEASE READ ALL OF THE INFORMATION!!!!!
Providence Church's Church in the Park: Sunday, August 16, 2026, at 10:30 a.m. at the Peterson Park Pavilion (middle and east section ONLY), 500 Broadway Avenue. NO Sunday School classes.
After service we will be having a picnic, fun, and fellowship.
Hamburgers and hot dogs will be provided for lunch, as well as tableware, buns, condiments, drinks and serving utensils.
PLEASE bring a side dish AND a dessert to share. THIS IS A TRADITONAL POTLUCK AND THERE IS NO SIGN-UP SHEET.
IF YOU HAVE A SIDE THAT NEEDS TO BE KEPT WARM, THERE IS ELECTRICITY AT THE PAVILION AND EXTENSION CORDS WILL BE AVAILABLE TO USE.
IF YOU HAVE A SIDE THAT NEEDS TO BE KEPT COLD, PLEASE BRING IT IN A COOLER WITH ICE.
