What do you hold more dear, a crucifix or your nation’s flag. Toward which one do you show the greater reverence? The symbol of eternal freedom or the symbol of earthly freedom? I was told it’s Flag Day. So, I’m wondering how many American Christians are actually adherence of Americanity instead of Christianity. If we value the flag more than the cross… 😬 Do your actions betray you?

According to my 20/15 Synod President pre-requisites, I think it would be acceptable to fast track a man’s eligibility for presidential office if (1) he has never expressed any desire to be a synodocrat or professor. If he has even hinted at using the pastoral office to become a prof, DP, or Synod President not only can he not be fast tracked, but he is permanently barred from ever holding any office outside of parish pastor, which we all agree is gracious given that pastor is the highest office in the Church. (2) His persecution for Christ must have nearly got him killed. Literal scars are helpful, of course. AND (3) it is 100% clear that he would personally HATE being Synod President.

Do you know what it would do to the culture of Synod if everyone knew our President had served 20 years in the parish and had proven himself a faithful war-torn soldier during at least fifteen of them? For one thing, imagine how much encouragement this would give the clergymen who are daily struggling to fight the good fight of faith and are being attacked for it. It makes sense to me that the Church Militant should have soldiers in the roles of leadership. Not academics and not politicians. Maybe we should change the name from President to General. This would be more accurate to Scripture, at least in how we understand these titles today.

A prof as Synod president is not a good idea. Books don’t require shepherding. Students are not parishioners. I think it should be a requirement that a presidential candidate must have 20 years behind him as a parish pastor, 15 of which must be grueling, taxing, humbling years of suffering in service to Christ wherein he learns to truly rely on Christ alone for everything. We should be selecting from a slate of battle hardened pastors. When the president’s years in office exceed the hard fought years of parish ministry he should have to resign. This would put the LCMS in a very strong position. It would solve most, if not all of our problems. Yes, all our problems stem from weak synodical leadership. Always.
