AJ Torah Minute - Not Just in Heaven - Direct from the AJ bimah (with the wall open for the holidays), Rabbi Scott shares his thoughts on this week's portion. We hope you'll join us tonight at 5 pm for Happy Hour, followed by Kabbalat Shabbat services at 5:45 pm. Tomorrow, Shabbat Morning services begin at 10 am and the Kiddush Lunch will celebrate the 50th wedding anniversary of Rabbi Robert and Deborah Slosberg. Shabbat Shalom!

What an incredible transformation! The Rabbi Robert and Deborah Slosberg Playground is truly the nature-based playground our preschool dreamed about for so long and seeing our children explore, climb, splash, and learn in this beautiful space makes it even more breathtaking.

We love watching this dream become a reality for our AJ kiddos!

This transformation is almost unbelievable and truly breathtaking!

Our kiddos have been loving this space for the past year, exploring through hands-on water play, climbing across the rocks, and letting their imaginations lead the way.

This is the nature-based playground we dreamed about for so long and seeing it become a reality is even better than we imagined!

All are invited to join Rabbi Scott and Cantor Lipp on Sunday, September 6th at 11:00 a.m. at the Adath Jeshurun Cemetery at 2926 Preston Highway for our Annual AJ Cemetery Service. A short service will be followed by prayers at the resting places of your loved ones. The service will be in-person only and no reservations are required.

Sometimes a transformation doesn’t mean starting from scratch!

Rather than replacing this much-loved playground structure, we kept its foundation and gave it a new lease on life. Updated slides, whimsical tree-shaped shade canopies, and other thoughtful improvements created a fresh look while allowing us to reuse much of what our students and teachers have enjoyed for years.

We also made the necessary updates to meet current ADA accessibility standards. While that meant saying goodbye to the monkey bars, it allowed us to create a safer, more accessible space that still feels familiar—and is ready for many more years of play!

Next up in our Rabbi Robert and Deborah Slosberg Playground transformation: the playground structure!

This has always been one of our students’ and teachers’ favorite parts of the playground. The updated structure features new slides and playful tree-shaped shade canopies that fit perfectly with our nature-based playground.

As part of bringing the structure into compliance with current ADA accessibility standards, we did have to say goodbye to the monkey bars—but the result is a safer, more accessible space that is ready for many new adventures!

Talk about a kitchen rehab! We went from plastic play kitchen sets to a beautiful, hands-on mud kitchen—where imagination is always on the menu. And the best part? Zero plumbing needed!

Next up in our Rabbi Robert and Deborah Slosberg Playground transformation: the area that is now our mud kitchen!

Mud kitchens are an important part of play-based learning, giving children opportunities to explore, create, problem-solve, and work together through hands-on, imaginative play. Whether they are making mud pies, mixing nature-inspired “recipes,” or running their own outdoor café, they are learning through every scoop, stir, and creation!

One of the most important parts of the Rabbi Robert and Deborah Slosberg Playground transformation is something you may not immediately see: major drainage improvements!

For years, persistent mud and standing water left a large portion of the playground unusable. Before we could add new play features, we first had to address these significant, ongoing drainage issues.

Thanks to those improvements, our children have now been enjoying this side of the playground for almost a year! The playground’s footprint may not have changed dramatically, but its usable play space is significantly larger providing even more room for music, creativity, exploration, and imaginative play.

Next up in our before-and-after series is an area that was once largely unusable because of persistent mud and standing water.

One reason the playground transformation has taken so long is that we first had to address significant drainage issues throughout the space. Now that the drainage has been improved, this area is usable againand has been transformed into a wonderful place for music, creativity, and imaginative play!

Of course, the Rabbi Robert and Deborah Slosberg Playground wouldn’t be complete without Cantor Lipp’s Bimah—the perfect outdoor space for weekly sing-alongs, imaginative performances, and learning together. We especially love the new log seating!
