AJ Torah Minute or More with Cantor David Lipp - Join us this weekend for a Scholar-in-Residence Shabbaton featuring Rabbi Aaron Gaber. Rabbi is currently serving as the Medical Support Chaplain for the US Army Cadet Summer Training at Ft. Knox. His theme is "Creating Holiness in Every Mission: Lessons from Army Chaplaincy." We'll enjoy Happy Hour at 5 pm this evening, followed by Kabbalat Shabbat services at 5:45 pm. Tomorrow, Shabbat morning services will begin at 10 am. Creating Holiness in Every Mission - Lessons from Army Chaplaincy

This coming weekend, on Friday, July 17th and Saturday, July 18th, AJ will welcome Rabbi Aaron M. Gaber as our Scholar-in-Residence. Rabbi Gaber brings experience as a military chaplain as well as a background in congregational service in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. We hope you'll join us to hear Rabbi Gaber's talks. Rabbi Gaber will speak during services on Friday evening and on Shabbat morning, and then following services on Saturday, will be our Shabbat Scholar. There's still time to sign up for this month's Shabbat Social! The evening begins with Happy Hour at 5 p.m., then Kabbalat Shabbat services at 5:45 p.m. Dinner will begin around 6:45 p.m. and will be catered by Chef Maureen Hartmann.

The cost is $15 per person with children 12 and under free of charge. RSVP's requested by Tuesday, July 7th at 5:00 pm.

Thoughts from Rabbi Scott Hoffman:

What does it mean to "look Jewish", i.e., to be "other"? Growing up, if I saw myself now as an adult, I would have said that I definitely look Jewish - male, gray haired, clean shaven, married with three children. But as an adult, I've become increasingly aware that Jews don't always need to "look Jewish". We have brothers and sisters who are black and brown, gay and le***an, transgender and nonbinary.

To be Jewish means, in other words, not to focus on physical appearance, but on how our thoughts, speech and action bring holiness into the world. In the words of Ethics of the Fathers (4:1), a truly wise person is one who learns from all others, and the truly honored person is one who honors all humanity.

Today, and all days, we are reminded of the words of Jewish poet Emma Lazarus, who in 1883 wrote: “Until we are all free...

AJ Torah Minute with Cantor David Lipp - Join us this weekend for AJ's Pride Shabbaton! Tonight, we'll start with Happy Hour at 5 pm, then Rabbi Scott will speak at Friday night services about the Conservative rabbinate and the LGBTQIA+ community. Tomorrow, Shabbat Morning Services begin at 10:00 a.m. Yehudah Husband will deliver the d'var Torah and will also be our Shabbat Scholar starting at around 12:30. His topic is "B'tzelem Elohim: Dignity at the Margins of Identity." Everyone is invited to stay for the delicious Kiddush lunch sponsored by the Julie Olson Shabbat Scholar Fund. Shabbat Shalom.
