Lakeland Community Church

Lakeland Community Church Located in Lee's Summit, Missouri - Lakeland is a place to hear and apply the way taught by Jesus. Come and see for yourself what God is doing at Lakeland.

Lakeland Community Church began in 1995 in the living room of Dan and Laurie Wilburn. They wanted to create a church for people who didn't go to church. They wanted a place where people who didn't know the drill, the language, the rituals, and the stories could come and hear the life changing message of Jesus in a way they could understand and apply to their lives. This has remained the hope and v

ision of Lakeland Community Church. Since 1995 Lakeland has met in a daycare, above a restaurant, and in a movie theater. In 2005 Lakeland purchased the All Star Family Sports Arena at 913 N.E. Colbern Road and changed it into the latest home of Lakeland Community Church (keeping one indoor soccer field!)

Each week and throughout the week people of all ages and all walks of life are hearing and applying the Way taught by Jesus Christ. You can find members of Lakeland making a difference for themselves and others on Sunday morning, throughout the week in their homes and neighborhoods, serving the homeless in the inner city, serving special-needs children on Saturday night, and traveling the world to China and Mexico in His name. Explore the claims of Jesus. Join his world-changing movement! Especially if you have never been to church or if you have been burned by church, Lakeland can be a fresh beginning for you!

This week, we invite you to participate in a blended contemplative exercise: Visio Divina and a Breath Prayer.

If you’ve been following along the past few weeks, you know we’ve been using Visio Divina within service—it means Divine Seeing—and really what we are doing is using an image, or artwork, to assist in our Prayers / a Breath Prayer is a short, simple-worded prayer that matches the natural rhythm of our breathing. So we’re focusing on a phrase on the IN breath, then focusing on another phrase on the OUT breath. And it’s repeated with the breath.

You’ll see two paintings side by side. The same artist, Worku Goshu, created these, titled Universe 1 and Universe 2. You might see Day and Night. Light and Dark. IN and OUT. You might see eyes. Whatever it is you see, just let your eyes wander over, and ask the Spirit to speak to you through the visuals.

As we look on at this artwork and open our hearts, here is a Breath prayer to anchor into, as well. This is something you can pray with your inner voice, saying to yourself:
With all of creation / You are making me New

On the IN breath: With all of Creation
On the OUT breath: You are making me New

Let’s spend some time in that prayer, in silence together.

MILESTONE MOMENT 🎉

Recently, our newest Kindergarteners and their families got to participate in the Explorers Milestone: Welcome to Campfire (grades K-4th).

These families had a fun evening where they gathered together in community and discovered ways to navigate the early stages of faith in their homes. The Kindergarteners also got to experience worship with KIP (Kids in Praise)!

As we continue our series, All Creation Sings, Pastors Vernon and Alex are diving deeper on what it means to be rooted. 🌴 🌲 🌳

This week, we are challenged to cultivate what we have rather than what we don’t have—cultivate what we have in the relationships, cultivate what we have in where we are.

For more context on this series, visit the Sunday Morning page in the Church Center app.

In case you missed it…

WE HAVE INTERNS! 🎉

Thanks to Lakeland’s generosity we are investing in the Emerging Leaders Program! Over the next 12 months, Corina and Alaina will be serving our community and stepping into what God has prepared for them. We are so excited to see how He uses their unique gifts, passion, and faith to make a lasting impact.

During this week’s Visio Divina, we received the painting Peaceable Kingdom created by John August Swanson and the following poem:

In the cradle of the verdant Earth,
Where life springs forth in silent mirth,
Roots emerge from soil’s embrace, An ancient dance, a sacred space.
Tangled tendrils, strong and bold, Whispers of secrets, stories untold,
They stretch and weave through ages past,
Guardians of life, they hold steadfast.

From towering oaks to grasses low,
In myriad forms through ebb and flow,
The heartbeat of the world they know,
An underground saga, a rhythmic glow –
Deep in the dark where shadows play,
They sip the echoes of night and day,
Each fiber a thread in nature’s loom, Binding the land, dispelling gloom.

In storms’ wild rage and sunlight’s kiss,
Roots grapple tighter, refusing to miss,
With every tempest, they endure, A testament of life, resilient—pure.
In the tapestry of life, they weave, A promise kept, a truth believed,

For in their grip, the Earth will stand, A legacy sown, our binding land.

We invite you to look, listen, and receive once again.
