We are a busy church! We believe that God not only wants people to go to church, but God wants the church to go to people! We are active in local, regional and national outreach programs! We are a Bible-based church! We believe the Bible guides us in everyday life. We are a church that seeks to find God’s truth and reflect that truth in all we do and say! We are a “We Can Make A Difference” Church! We believe that Jesus created the church to make a difference in the community and world. With God’s guidance, our ministry is able to touch lives and nurture spirits. We are an Evangelistic church! Jesus’ words to “Go and make disciples of all nations” gives direction to our work. We seek to spread the “Good News” of God’s love through our words and actions. If this sounds like the church family you are looking for, then we invite you to come and grow with us! First Christian Church (FFC) is a member of the Christian Church Disciples of Christ (DOC) denomination and has been an active church since 1855, although not in the same spot. The staff at FCC Leavenworth includes people who care about others. They have a dedication to God and to the service of God's people. From the Pastor to the choir director, and from the custodian to the director of the preschool, each and every one serves the congregation and God in a spirit of Christian fellowship. We have been asked to help out the Christian Church in Ottawa. They need help cleaning and repairing parts of their church in preparation for re-vitalizing the congreagation. The small and aged congregation is simply unable. We are planning on 7 November, a Saturday, to have a group of volunteers from the NE Area (16 Churches) of Kansas gather in Ottawa to help them. The Leavenworth Christian Men's Fellowship will be providing some volunteers. More to follow as we work out details with Rev. Perdue. Mark your calendar and let Gary Phillips or Bill McKeel know that you want to volunteer. Lunch is included!

A few weeks ago Rev. Stanley our regional minister asked me if wanted to take part in a Southwest Region Zoom series on lay preaching. It has been extraordinary!! Last Monday night we had Rev. Dr. Phillip Ward as the guest speaker. He gave the 10 Commandments of Sermons. I wanted to share those with this church. These commandments are an excellent way to examine a sermon. Number 2. causes many Pastors problems because it is so easy for one's views to slip in when the scripture author had very different ideas.

1. Never preach a text you haven't first studied
2. Never confuse your opinion with the author's intention
3. Context comes before cleverness
4. Don't use Greek or Hebrew to impress — use it to illuminate
5. Know the Bible, but also know your people
6. Know your people's history — history shapes how they hear Scripture
7. Culture is a conversation partner, not the authority — the Word remains the authority
8. Illustrations should illuminate truth, not compete with it
9. Application answers the question: "So what do we do now?"
10. Never become so concerned about making people shout that you forget to give them something worth shouting about
