The Transfiguration Window

One of the most breathtaking windows in our sanctuary depicts the Transfiguration of Jesus, a moment when Peter, James, and John witnessed Christ revealed in divine glory.

At the top of the window, Jesus stands radiant and transformed, flanked by Moses and Elijah—representing the Law and the Prophets. Their presence reminds us that Christ is the fulfillment of God’s promises throughout Scripture.

Below, the three disciples shield their eyes and fall back in awe. The artist beautifully captures the human response to a glimpse of heaven: wonder, humility, and amazement.

The Transfiguration reminds us that even when life’s path leads through uncertainty, Christ’s glory shines through. It was a moment that strengthened the disciples before the challenges ahead—and it continues to encourage believers today.

Notice the contrast between the heavenly scene above and the earthly reaction below. More than a work of art, it is a visual sermon, inviting us to see Jesus not only as a teacher, but as the beloved Son of God.

“This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him.” — Matthew 17:5

Our sixth and final window in the Sanctuary Series is The Ascension Window.

The Ascension window depicts Jesus Christ ascending into Heaven forty days after Easter.

Acts 1:9-11 “While they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight.”

This remarkable stained glass window portrays the Ascension — Christ rising into Heaven accompanied by two angels.
The disciples in this artist’s version appear to be overwhelmed and in awe. Whether intentional or not, it creates a visual reminder that humans often struggle to comprehend God’s plans in the moment. The disciples may represent Peter, James, and John, his inner circle who witnessed many of Christ’s most significant moments.

As Jesus ascended his earthly work was completed. Ten days later the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples turning them into bold Apostles giving birth to the Christian Church (Pentecost).

There is movement and majesty in this piece, from the brilliant blue sky to the flowing robes and upward motion of the scene. Yet beneath the beauty is a powerful message: Christ’s earthly ministry may have ended, but His presence and promise remained.

For over a century, this window has been part of the spiritual and historical fabric of First Presbyterian Church in Leavenworth.

The Risen Christ Window

This stunning image of the risen Christ has greeted worshippers for generations.

With arms extended in welcome, the window radiates peace, hope, and invitation. The rich blues, golds, and greens come alive as sunlight fills the sanctuary.

The Fourth Window in our series is:

Jesus and the Rich Young Ruler

One of the most thought-provoking windows in the church.

This scene depicts Jesus speaking with the rich young ruler — a man searching for truth, yet challenged by what it would cost to fully follow Christ.

The detail and color in this window are remarkable, but so is the message: faith calls us to examine what we truly value.

More than a century later, this window still invites quiet reflection inside First Presbyterian Church in Leavenworth.

The third window in our Sanctuary Window series is:

The Resurrection Morning Window

“This breathtaking window captures the moment everything changed.

The women arrive at the tomb expecting sorrow… but instead are met by the angel proclaiming Christ has risen.

Notice the movement in the scene — the surprise, awe, and hope unfolding all at once. The stained glass almost seems alive in the morning light.

For generations, this window has reminded worshippers at First Presbyterian Church that despair never gets the final word. Easter morning still speaks.”

In the second installment of our Sanctuary Window review, we look at the “Suffer the Little Children” Window

Few images capture the heart of Christ more beautifully than this one.

In this stained glass scene, Jesus welcomes children into His presence — a reminder of His words:
‘Let the little children come unto me.’

The artist filled this window with warmth, openness, and tenderness. It reminds us that faith is not about status or position, but about trust, humility, and an open heart.

For more than a century, this window has quietly spoken to all who enter First Presbyterian Church in Leavenworth: every person matters, every soul is welcomed, and grace belongs to all.

P.S. “Suffer the Little Children” comes from the language of the King James Version of the Bible. In older English, the word “suffer” did not mean pain or hardship the way we commonly use it today. It meant: “allow” or “permit.”

The full verse is from Matthew 19:14:

“Suffer little children, and forbid them not, to come unto me: for of such is the kingdom of heaven.”

In modern language, Jesus was saying:
‘Let the little children come unto me.’

This year marks the 170th year of Presbyterians in Leavenworth, Kansas. The current church at the corner of 4th and Walnut St was dedicated on January 3rd, 1909. It is reported that as many as 1,000 people attended the dedication.
This week, we will take a look at the stained glass windows present in the sanctuary.
First up is the The Nativity Window.

(Christ’s birth with shepherds gathered around)

“‘And she brought forth her firstborn son… and laid Him in a manger.’”

This beautiful stained glass window captures one of the most humble and powerful moments in history — the birth of Christ. Surrounded by shepherds, Mary and Joseph welcome the Savior into the world not in a palace, but in simplicity and quiet grace.

For generations, sunlight has streamed through this window at First Presbyterian Church in Leavenworth, reminding us that hope often enters the world softly… and changes everything.

These windows are more than art. They are sermons in glass — telling timeless stories of faith, humility, and redemption.
