Our summer study on Christian nationalism began this week, and it’s not too late for you to join! Our Signal group’s discussion is rolling, and our first in person group met last week! Each week, participants discuss relevant articles so make sure you are signed up on the Sign Up Genius or are in the Signal group so you can have the readings given to you ahead of time. This week’s topic is….

Week 2: Investigate: How does Christian Nationalism relate to democracy?

Have you ever wanted to teach Sunday School, but not sure you can make the full commitment? Now is the time! During the summer months (June 28-Sept. 6), our regular Sunday School teachers take a much-deserved break. This summer, the theme of Sunday School will be "Women of the Bible": each week we'll focus on a female character that doesn't get much attention (Esther, Deborah, Hannah, Miriam, etc). Pastor Emily will prepare all the curriculum and materials and send it out to you in advance. Please note all teachers need to have a current background check on file with the church (completed within 5 years); if you do not already have one this can be easily completed through the church office.

Sign up available upon request.

This year, we've been trying out a new governance model for our church. This model consists of three governing bodies: a Ministry Council that coordinates ministry-focused groups, a Spiritual Life Council that focuses on worship, faith formation, and spiritual care, and an Administrative Board that oversees the operations and financial resources of the church. This structure is intended to expand representation in lay leadership for all of the ministries of the congregation, allow people to participate in those ministries with more flexibility, and take some of the administrative burden off our pastors to help them focus on their ministerial duties.

Now that we're halfway through our trial year, we'd like to get your feedback on how this approach has affected your participation in our church community. Please take a few moments to complete the survey online before June 22. There will also be some printed copies in the narthex for the next few weeks.

We'll use this feedback to determine next steps, which will probably include adjustments to this model and revisions of our church governing documents. This work will take place throughout the summer, and we hope to get additional feedback from the congregation in the fall. We'll make a final determination on the future of church governance at a special congregational meeting after worship on October 25.

The Moderator Team (John Schinker-Moderator, Donna Hess-Vice Moderator, and Pastor Amy) deeply appreciate your feedback so that our governance structure truly reflects our entire congregation.

Thank you!

Confirmation Sunday is a milestone in our congregational life, when young people publicly affirm their baptismal vows and take ownership of their faith. This Sunday, June 14, we will be confirming three youth. With Pastor Emily as their guide, these beautiful souls have worked hard all year long to complete all the requirements of confirmation and have written personalized statements of faith. They also completed a project of their own choosing to help them explore something of particular interest to them and their faith journey. Please plan to be present for this special and momentous occasion at Kent UCC! Our three youth will receive the Rite of Confirmation and we will honor them with a reception after worship.

Praise be to God!

“As Jesus was walking along, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth; and he said to him, "Follow me." And he got up and followed him.

And as he sat at dinner in the house, many tax collectors and sinners came and were sitting with him and his disciples. When the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" But when he heard this, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, 'I desire mercy, not sacrifice.' For I have come to call not the righteous but sinners."

“While he was saying these things to them, suddenly a leader of the synagogue came in and knelt before him, saying, "My daughter has just died; but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live." And Jesus got up and followed him, with his disciples. Then suddenly a woman who had been suffering from hemorrhages for twelve years came up behind him and touched the fringe of his cloak, for she said to herself, "If I only touch his cloak, I will be made well." Jesus turned, and seeing her he said, "Take heart, daughter; your faith has made you well." And instantly the woman was made well. When Jesus came to the leader's house and saw the flute players and the crowd making a commotion, he said, "Go away; for the girl is not dead but sleeping." And they laughed at him. But when the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took her by the hand, and the girl got up. And the report of this spread throughout that district.”

Two Sunday's ago, David Owen invited us consider supporting “Strengthen the Church”, one of the UCC's Five for Fives. He reminded us that these funds allow for the expansion of ministry and growth of local congregations, often through grants. One grant has funded the Community Fellowship Program where the next generation is able to practice becoming compassionate, justice-oriented, Christian Leaders through Service Learning. Individual churches may seek to fund different church-growth paths. If you have not had the opportunity to give, there is still time – in person, this final Sunday, or on Engage.

Thank you for helping the Kent UCC send forth love through our gifts.
