Okoa Refuge is a 501(C)(3) formed in 2008 that rescues Abandoned and Orphaned Children in Uganda Okoa, through holistic care and creating family. Okoa provides the children the opportunities to be a kid, normalcy and a chance to break the cycle of poverty.

At Okoa Refuge, therapists use sand to provide support and sensory input as children practice balance, shifting their weight, and reaching. Each session works on neck, trunk, and postural control—with the goal of greater independence in sitting and more opportunities to play.

How do you make an impact that lasts for generations?

At Okoa Refuge, it begins by helping children become disciples of Christ. Not only by teaching them about faith, but by giving them opportunities to live it out.

Through daily devotions, prayer, serving on worship teams, participating in community projects, developing practical life skills, and growing alongside Christian mentors, children learn what it means to love God and serve others.

The hope is that each child will carry that faith into their future families, churches, and communities, becoming disciples who go on to make more disciples.

That is how one transformed life can impact generations.

Care doesn’t stop at the center - it continues at home.

Through home-based care, Okoa Refuge’s dedicated team brings physiotherapy, occupational therapy, medical support, counseling, spiritual care and practical assistance directly to children in their own homes.

These visits allow our team to monitor each child’s progress, guide caregivers through continued therapy, feeding and hygiene, and identify new challenges that may require additional support. Families may also receive essentials such as food, medication and daily necessities.

Today, we’re especially grateful for the staff members who faithfully show up and the families who work tirelessly each day to help their children grow, heal and experience greater independence.

Home-based care is a partnership, and every visit is a reminder that no family has to walk this journey alone.

Developing updates from Chad

Led by our missionary, Tendo, the Okoa Refuge team recently completed a baseline survey in the Ambugouna community, connecting with more than 150 families to better understand their greatest needs.

The team found that many families face persistent poverty, food insecurity, and limited access to education. Chad’s challenging climate and soil also make farming difficult, leaving many communities dependent on relief food.

Based on these findings, 50 children from high-risk families have been selected to receive support through our new Child Empowerment Program (CEP).

As we begin this work in Chad, our goal is to meet practical needs, build meaningful relationships, and share the hope and love of Jesus. Please pray for these children, their families, and our team as this work continues.

What can happen when you simply keep showing up?

Doors begin to open. Relationships are built. And lives begin to change.

Our missionary team continues traveling from community to community, sharing the Gospel, leading Discovery Bible Studies, equipping believers with Bibles, and walking alongside families.

Recently, hundreds gathered to watch Gospel films, 76 people accepted Jesus, and 30 believers took the next step of obedience through baptism.

Communities that were once difficult to reach are welcoming our team. Families are opening their doors. Children and adults are gathering to hear the Word of God.

There are still challenges - especially reliable transportation needed to continue reaching and following up with these communities - but our team continues to show up.

Please join us in praying for our missionaries, for reliable transportation, and for every person hearing the Gospel.

Because sometimes transformation begins with simply being willing to keep showing up.

Rescue is only the beginning.

When a child is rescued through Okoa Refuge’s GBV team, their health and safety come first. They receive immediate medical attention before being welcomed into a safe, family-style home surrounded by caregivers, social workers, and mentors.

From there, our team creates a care plan based on the child’s individual needs while working to determine the safest path forward - whether that means resettlement with a loving family or continued care at Okoa.

If returning home is not safe, the team works toward another appropriate short- or long-term placement. When necessary, we also provide counseling, legal support, and continued follow-up.

Because rescue is not simply about removing a child from danger - it is about walking beside them as healing begins and helping them move toward a safe, hope-filled future.
