Bible Study Recap: Gifts of the Holy Spirit | Part 1 - The Gift of Tongues

During Bible study last week, we learned that Scripture shows us three different ways the gift of tongues can function:

1. 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐬

There are moments when God, through the power of the Holy Spirit, gives someone the ability to speak in a language they have never learned.

We see this in Acts 2, when the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other tongues. People from different nations heard them speaking in their own languages and were able to understand the message of the Gospel.

God can use this gift to communicate His message to someone who speaks a different language than the person speaking.

2. 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐛𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭

Tongues can also be given as a spiritual gift to be used within the congregation. When someone speaks in tongues, it edifies the person speaking.

However, when tongues are spoken publicly and someone is given the gift of interpretation, the message can be understood by the congregation and used to edify and build up the body of Christ.

As Paul explains in 1 Corinthians 14:5, tongues with interpretation can be used so that “the church may be built up.”

God gives spiritual gifts not only for our own personal spiritual growth, but also so that the body of Christ can be strengthened and encouraged.

3. 𝐓𝐨𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐩𝐫𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐠𝐮𝐚𝐠𝐞

Scripture also speaks about praying in the Spirit. This can be a deeply personal expression of prayer between you and God.

Sometimes the person praying may understand what the Spirit is saying, but often times that isn’t the case. Interpretation can be given by the Holy Spirit if you ask.

Paul says:
“For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays…” (1 Corinthians 14:14)

Speaking in tongues is POWERFUL. 🔥

But here is something important:

𝑌𝑜𝑢 𝑑𝑜 𝑛𝑜𝑡 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑡𝑜 𝑠𝑝𝑒𝑎𝑘 𝑖𝑛 𝑡𝑜𝑛𝑔𝑢𝑒𝑠 𝑡𝑜 𝑏𝑒 𝑎 𝑏𝑒𝑙𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟 𝑜𝑟 𝑡𝑜 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝐻𝑜𝑙𝑦 𝑆𝑝𝑖𝑟𝑖𝑡.

Salvation comes through faith in Jesus Christ alone.

At the same time, if you desire the gift of tongues, ask God.

Ask the Holy Spirit to lead you, fill you, and give you whatever spiritual gifts He desires for you.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are still alive and active today.

“Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts…” (1 Corinthians 14:1)

Seek God. Pursue His presence. Ask for whatever gifts you desire to use for His kingdom, and be willing to receive.

“Do not forbid speaking in tongues.” (1 Corinthians 14:39)

REMINDER: THIS IS A 5th SUNDAY so NO SUNDAY SERVICE AUGUST 30th! BUT.... we are so excited for Sunday Service on September 6th at 10:30am! We will be focusing on praising and worshiping our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ hardcore! Our ministers will share their testimonies and we will allow for time of prophesying!

Tomorrow, we’re heading to Pendleton to Sow Hope and share the love of Jesus with a community that was deeply impacted by the flooding. We’d love for anyone who feels led to join us.

We know this is short notice, but we feel led to move with the Lord’s timing. We always want to move in step with Him and be obedient when He leads us.

Our hearts are saddened by the devastation this flooding has caused in so many nearby communities. Homes have been damaged, memories have been lost, and for many, the sense of safety and security they once knew has been shaken.

A home isn’t just a place. It’s where memories are made, families gather, and life happens. When that is suddenly disrupted, the loss can run much deeper than what we can see.

We believe there is an opportunity to spread hope, share the love of Jesus, and bring His presence into one of the communities impacted by this tragedy. Not because we have all the answers, but because we know the One who does. 👏🔥

Tomorrow, beginning promptly at 3:50 PM, we will join together as the body of Christ in Pendleton. We’ll be there to pray with people, encourage them, and simply remind them that they are not alone and that Jesus loves them beyond measure.

We’re trusting the Holy Spirit to lead every conversation and every interaction, believing that even in the middle of the storm, Jesus is still near. The hope they are searching for during this difficult time isn’t found in what this world can offer: it is found in Jesus. ✝️

Let’s carry His light, share His love, and remind people that they are not forgotten and that the Lord sees them in their pain.

Pastor Angel shares a powerful reminder about the impact of the choices we make.

Every day, we have many opportunities to live according to the Word of God or according to the ways of this world.

One way leads to life, and the other leads to death.

So ask yourself:

❓Are the choices you are making today drawing you closer to Jesus, or pushing you further away from Him?

❓Do your choices reflect the ways of Jesus and His heart, or do they reflect the ways of this world?

Today, choose Jesus. Choose His ways. Choose obedience to His Word. ✝️

He is the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
