I perform an exercise in frustration fairly regularly when I endeavor to locate something in my garage. As I look at the stacks of things filling my garage, I am struck by the fact that I have an awful lot of “junk”! As a matter of fact, it seems I spend more time looking for things than I do actually doing things! The ironic thing about all of this is the fact that I pick up an object repeatedly, that I wasn’t looking for, while looking for something else, and I’m convinced that if I had been looking for that particular item, I wouldn’t have been able to locate it at all!
Recalling this little charade has gotten me to thinking about how much of our lives are spent “searching”. I’m pretty sure that the things I am now calling “junk” are all items that at some point me, or someone else in my family, felt like we just had to have! It’s interesting to face the realization that we just have to have things that down the road become nothing more than clutter and a nuisance! Top that off by the fact that often we actually forget we even had many of the things.
The spiritual application here is clear to me. We spend an awful lot of time here on this earth in “search” mode. We look for better jobs, good bargains, nice cars, places to live….and the list goes on seemingly endlessly. Most likely this is the result of the human condition from the Fall!
I can honestly tell you that my search for something to satisfy the emptiness that was in my heart is over! Jesus has more than satisfied that longing! I no longer find myself picking up “junk” in my search for that elusive feeling of peace and contentment. Since my sins have been forgiven, that search is over.
My life has now become a quest, not to find peace, but to live in obedience to the Holy Spirit and God’s Word in such a way that my peace remains! Not that I’m earning my salvation, but rather just attempting to walk worthy of the fact that I’ve been redeemed!
In the meantime, my desire is to de-clutter my life, my house, my garage, my basement, and every other area of my life, so that I can focus on living to please Jesus in everything! I don’t want to be so encumbered by “stuff” that I can’t live for Him effectively day to day!

I’ve only recently learned that the additives we’ve placed in the fuel of our vehicles was put there for nefarious reasons, and it is actually detrimental to the power and efficiency of the engine!
I am not here to debate, or defend that information, but I confess to you it makes perfect sense to me. Being a mechanic, I totally understand what the information implies. Being a human being, I understand the reasons behind the additives, although I don’t agree with the reasoning and purpose behind the motives of those who insisted on them.
There is a spiritual application here that must be made, that’s what I’m after! Here’s my point: the power and efficiency of our spiritual life is diminished by the additives we put into our lives.
As hard as it may be to believe, not only is it possible, but it is sadly a daily occurrence that we hinder and diminish God’s power He so wants to give to our lives. Sadly enough we rationalize it to the point that any discussion is typically shut down or cut off abruptly.
This is very much like the arguments of those who put additives into our fuel, diminishing its power and efficiency! We’re protecting the earth for our children, it’s the proper thing to do!
I’m not lost here if you follow my logic. We add fretting to our lives, anger, frustrations, fear...all these additives do is diminish our power and efficiency in living to please Jesus! Not only do we add these things, but we defend and justify them, all in an attempt to legitimize our actions. Here’s the unadulterated truth!
Fear and fretting along with anger and frustrations, are the opposite of faith, peace, love and trust. As kindly as I can say it, why in the world would you want to justify the first list and forfeit the second? It’s just my nature to fear, fret, be angry and frustrated!! Really!!?? God came in the flesh and died for us to enable us to crucify our old selves, and be made new!! Ever-changing to become more and more like Jesus!
Keep list one if you want, I personally choose list two! I want faith, peace, love and trust to work in my life. And while you putt along, making slow if any progress, by God’s grace, I’m roaring powerfully towards Heaven! Bragging? Yes!...on God’s power, not mine!!

The word “good” carries with it a lot of mental pictures for most of us. To most it means pleasant, pleasing, tasty, enjoyable, desirable, and the list of adjectives goes on almost endlessly it would seem.
As a matter of fact, many of us grew up hearing that word used in conjunction with our behavior. “You need to be good while I’m gone”! Again the idea of acceptable, pleasant, etc. comes to mind with that phrase.
When it comes to God however, it is important that we grasp the truth that God IS good! He himself is the embodiment of everything good. As a matter of fact, if asked to define good, it would be 100% correct and appropriate to simply say, “God” because in all truth, He alone is good!
Ironically, when you look up the word “good” in the dictionary, one of the several meanings you will read is as follows:
“morally excellent; virtuous; righteous; pious: a good man.”
Interestingly enough, those of us who are friends of God see immediately that we have simply expounded on his character to obtain that definition, we also understand that apart from Hi, none of us are good, just like Jesus said!
To further prove what I am saying, look at this list of synonyms for “good” ...Pure, moral, worthy, exemplary, upright. Sounds like another list of the attributes of God to me!
What you and I need to keep in mind is the simple truth that God embodies all that is good. If it is good, it originates with him, regardless of who else takes the credit, we know the truth because we know that God IS good!
