Soto Mission of Hawaii

Soto Mission of Hawaii Shoboji was founded in 1913 by the Reverend Hosen Isobe. It started off as a temporary Betsuin locat Soto Academy (Grades Kindergarten thru fifth Grade).

Soto Mission of Hawaii also observes all the major Buddhist ceremonies such as Nehan-e, Hanamatsuri, Jodo-e, O-Higan, O-Bon, and Daruma-ki as well as conducts memorial services, weddings, blessings, and funerals. There are many activities at Soto Mission of Hawaii,including; Sunday School, Zazen kai, Tea Ceremony (Sado), Koto, Bon Dance Practice. Tomo no kai (Circle of Friends) meets regularly to

sing songs, learn how to play the ukulele, do fun exercise and other activities. Nuuanu Kumon Center(tutoring of Math, English, and Japanese)

Everyone is welcomed to come to Soto Mission of Hawaii, Betsuin and participate in the services and activities. The weekly Sunday service begins at 9:30 AM.

Tonight’s (8/14/26) Bon Dance will go on as scheduled.
However, we will cancel Saturday night’s Bon Dance out of an abundance of caution.
We will certainly appreciate your help in spreading the word.

Friday Bon Dance is on as scheduled
Saturday Bon Dance is canceled

Soto Mission of Hawaii Bon Dance – Weather Update

At this time, our Friday night Bon Dance will be held as scheduled.

Our Saturday night Bon Dance also remains scheduled at this time. However, we are closely monitoring Tropical Storm Lala and its potential effects on Oʻahu and the Hawaiian Islands.

If the storm’s forecast track and expected conditions pose a threat to the islands, Saturday’s Bon Dance will be canceled. We will make that determination as soon as the forecast provides enough clarity and will announce any cancellation promptly.

Even if the center of the storm does not directly pass over Oʻahu, strong wind gusts and heavy rain could create concerns not only at the temple, but also for our volunteers, dancers, guests, and their homes and families.

If Lala turns farther south or continues westward on a track that takes it safely away from the Hawaiian Islands, we plan to proceed with Saturday’s Bon Dance as scheduled.

For now: Friday is ON. Saturday remains scheduled, but is subject to cancellation depending on Lala’s track and expected conditions.

We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we closely monitor the storm. The safety of our temple community and the public will guide our decision.

The Golden Chain of love By Dorothy Hunt

I am a link in Lord Buddha's golden chain of love that stretches around the world.
I must keep my link bright and strong.
I will try to be kind and gentle to every living thing, and protect all who are weaker than myself.
I will try to think pure and beautiful thoughts, to say pure and beautiful words, and to do pure and beautiful deeds, knowing that what I do now affects my life and the lives of others. May every link in Lord Buddha's golden chain of love become bright and strong, and may we all attain perfect peace.

This year's UHSSWA conference's dharma session was on Golden Chain of Love, presented by Ms. Trinidad Hunt.

Did you know that it was published in the Buddhist journal without an author? Ms. Trinidad saw the article and shared that this was written by her grandmother, Dorothy Hunt. We are glad that everyone around the world knows who wrote this beautiful verse.

This hibiscus was planted by Honolulu Fukushima Kenjin Kai in remembrance of the 10th anniversary of the Tohoku Japan disaster March 11, 2021.
