Week 6: Reading the Bible in a Year. It's Labor Day Weekend! You have an additional day to catch up if you are behind, or if you are caught up, great time to enjoy the extra time! Either way, we are glad you are on this journey with us!
Week 6: Exodus 19-38. A Throne for God (Ex 37). The ark of the covenant was an object that reminded the Israelites of the presence of God in their midst. Although some nomadic peoples used small traveling casks for worship, no ancient people had a sacred object that compares to Israel's large box with is heavy adornment and sculptured cherubim on the lid. There are various ideas as to what the ark represents; as a chest; as a portable throne for Israel's God; or as an extension of God's presence. It served as a container to hold items, the ark bore the words of the deity: the tablets of the Ten Commandments. Other items contained in the ark were Aaron's rod and a jar of manna (Heb. 9:4).
As a portable throne, the ark provided the place where God would "sit" in the presence of the Israelites. The cherubim on the ark (Ex 37) were not images of God, but rather divine attendants. The ark was a symbol of the invisible presence of God. The possession of the ark in battle represented both the presence and the favor of God (1 Sam 4:3-7). Its capture by the Philistines meant that the favor of God had been lost as well (1 Sam 4:19-22).

As you read this week's chapters: Where was the Red Sea? (Ex. 10:19) The Hebrew slaves escaped Egypt by way of the Red Sea. In antiquity this Red Sea also included the Gulf of Suez and the Gulf of Aqaba, the two gulfs into which it splits. The precise location of the Exodus crossing has been debated by scholars since antiquity without any agreement on a possible site.
The Red Sea is called Yam Suph in Hebrew, which is often translated as "sea of reeds. The Sea of Reeds would refer to the marshes where the bulrushes or reeds grow plentifully. In a number of Old Testament passages, Yam Suph is associated with the Gulf of Aqaba, which marked the southern tip of King Solomon's empire. Yet in other passages Yam Suph probably refers to the Gulf of Suez, since the narrative indicates a body of water bordering on Egypt. Scholars favor a location in the eastern Delta region of Egypt, but the location is still undetermined.

The Book of Exodus: The Hebrews' exodus from bo***ge in Egypt is the defining event both in Israel's emergence as a nation and in the shape of that nation's faith. The Book of Exodus devotes about equal space to the events and to the ensuing covenant. The first half (1-19) tells the history, from Moses' birth through the Exodus itself up to Israel's climactic encounter with God on Mount Sinai, The second half of the book (20-40 consists mostly of God's instructions to His covenant people-both general like the Ten Commandments, and specific, like the instructions for buildig the tabernacle, Israel's tent shrine.

Stay focused, on reading the Bible in a Year. You can read a little bit every day, or sit down in a cozy chair and read for an hour. Whatever is your style, keep reading! We can do this together! As we read this weeks chapters, here is some extra information on Gen 46:1-27 The Twelve Tribes of Isreal. Each tribe was a social group composed of many clans and families, together with their dependents, outside the ties of blood kinship, who had become associated with the group through covenant, marriage, adoption, or slavey. Isreal was an association of twelve tribes, designated by the names of the ancestors from whom they were descended. Jacob, whose name was later changed to Israel, was the father of 12 sons. The sons of Jacob, excluding Levi and Joseph but including Joseph's sons, Manasseh and Ephraim, were the ancestors of the later tribal units in the nation's history. The development of the tribes begins with the events described in the Book of Exodus. In Genesis 47:1-50, Jacob enters Egypt. Jacob was 130 years old when he entered Egypt. 200 years passed between Abraham's birth and this entry into Egypt.

Genesis 30–47 narrates the complex family dynamics of Jacob, the birth of his children, Joseph’s journey from slavery to becoming second-in-command in Egypt, and the eventual relocation of Jacob’s family to Egypt.

Week 3 of the "Read the Bible in a Year Challenge". Remember to set time each and every day to read God's word. Remember the start your readings with The Prayer to Abide by God's Revealed Will. Merciful Father, Your Word was written for our instruction so that by steadfastness and by encouragement of the Scriptues we might have hope. Grant us sound interpretation of all the Scriptures that we may receive all their comfort and hope according to Your Holy Spirit's wiill and intent. Grant that we abide in this simple, direct, and useful exposition that is permanently and well grounded in Your revealed will. Teach us to flee all abstruse and specious questions and disputations so that we reject and condemn all things contrary to Your true, simple, and usefule teachings; through Christ Jesus, Our Savior. Amen.

Certainly confess and repent of whatever sins you know. But also entrust your body and life to be the One who accomplishes His purposes in the midst of suffering.
