Bellamy United Methodist Church

“Lord, fill us with unconditional love.
Guide us to be a living church.
Empower with compassion to serve our community.
Make us Doers of the Word.
Amen.”

It’s a simple prayer, but it’s one that has guided us this year. We pray it aloud together each week, and some of us have made praying it a daily ritual.

This commissioning prayer is a reminder that being the church is about more than what happens within our walls on Sunday mornings. It’s about how we love our neighbors, how we show up for one another, and how we put our faith into action in the world around us.

It’s about offering love without conditions, serving with compassion, and recognizing the ways God calls us to be present in our community.

As we pray these words, may they be more than a familiar routine. May they shape our hearts, guide our actions, and remind us that we are called not just to hear the Word, but to live it.

May we be a living church. May we be a people of compassion. May we be Doers of the Word. ❤️

🎃 ‘Tis the season for fall festivities! Our youth exercised their creativity last week with some good old fashioned pumpkin carving.

We’re grateful for opportunities to gather, grow in faith, and make memories together. 🧡🍂

The Spirit Speaks to Communities

The Spirit didn't speak only to the prophets. The Spirit spoke to churches.

Acts 15 is one of the most important texts in the New Testament for understanding how the early church made decisions. It didn't defer to a single visionary. It gathered — across genuine disagreement — and listened together. The result: "It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us."

That "us" is doing enormous work. The prophetic community is not a collection of individually prophetically-gifted people. It is a community practicing discernment together.

"It seemed good to the Holy Spirit and to us." — Acts 15:28

Where in your community life are you practicing the discipline of listening together — across difference — rather than waiting for one person to have the answer?

Justice Like a River

"Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream."

Amos does not give a program. He gives an image. A river does not pause. It does not take days off. It does not stop at the edge of the politically complicated. It rolls.

The prophetic vision for justice is not incremental — it is elemental. Water in motion. The image itself is a rebuke of the slow, comfortable pace at which communities of faith often move toward the hard work of naming and addressing injustice.

Come this Sunday ready to sit under this word honestly.

"Let justice roll on like a river, righteousness like a never-failing stream!" — Amos 5:24

The Full Armor of Truth

Paul's armor of God passage is often read as individual spiritual warfare. But read in context — Paul is writing to a community under imperial pressure — it is communal and structural.

Truth. Righteousness. Peace. Faith. Salvation. The Word of God. These are not private spiritual accessories. They are the community's equipment for standing against the forces that make injustice feel permanent.

"Stand firm then." The call is to not be moved. To not normalize what God has not normalized. To hold the prophetic alternative when everything around you says: this is just the way things are.

"Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist." — Ephesians 6:14

Identify one place in your daily life where you are tempted to normalize something that the prophets would name. Just notice it today. Awareness is the first form of resistance.

The Church's Own Royal Consciousness

Walter Brueggemann — a scholar who has devoted his life to studying the prophetic tradition — makes one of his most provocative moves: Solomon, Israel’s success story, is also Israel’s captivity.

Temple. Military. Economy. Theology. All of it became instruments of the royal project. And the prophets arose not primarily against foreign enemies but against the arrangements Israel itself had built.

Which means the church must turn this lens on itself before it turns it on anyone else. Where have we built our own version of Solomon's court? Where has our comfort become more important than our commission? This is not condemnation — it is the prophetic invitation to see clearly.

"Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the Lord God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is." — Amos 5:14

Where might the church — including Bellamy — have arrangements that need the same honest naming Amos brought to Israel?
