Jeremiah 29: 10-14
Jeremiah 29:11 is quoted a lot for different occasions and reasons. As I was reading this chapter 2 days ago, I thought of how we miss the context of verse 11. The Israelites had been in captivity by Babylon. They had disobeyed God and God had said enough of your disobedience. I am sure that this was the worst time in the life of many Israelites. They were wondering where God was. "God are you there." or "God please don't forget me." may have been uttered by many people. When life get hard like it did for the people of Israel, we want to hear. from God. We want to know that God has not forgotten us. Our tears of crying out to God may seem pointless. We seem loss in a difficult circumstance whether physical or emotional. I am sure some of the people of Israel wondered if they would every get out of Babylon and some did not.
In verse 10, God says there is a period that you will be in this captivity. God assures them that they will not be in captivity forever. We at times want to just know it is not forever that our life or the life of someone we love will not be dealing with a hardship forever. There is a light at the end of the tunnel. God not only wanted to assure the people of Israel that the captivity would end but He had not left them. I love how God comforts me that He is still there. His Word still stands to assure us that He has not left us. His promises are still here. His Word may be discounted by some, but God was there in the captivity and after the captivity. God is here for us during an illness and after an illness. God is here for us during a death of a loved one and after the death of a loved one. God is here with us during difficult issues with our children and after they have become positive.
Only after God has talked about the captivity ending and His being with them and His promises still standing does He move into saying, “For I know the plans I have for you” God knew we needed a reassurance just like the people of Israel that bad times may end, and He is there. Isaiah 41:10 says to “Fear not, I am with you,”. God’s Word constantly assures us He is there even in the toughest of times.
In verses 11-14, God says, He has good plans for us to give us a future and hope. We can pray to Him, and He listens to us. If we seek God, we find Him. This come after God says the captivity is ending. Whatever is imprisoning our thoughts, prayers and time negativity is ending. God’s promises are still true. God is still here. He is moving us from confinement of an issue to knowing that God’s plans for us have a new hope. We do not think anymore that our life is determined by something that seemingly chains us but God’s plans of hope.
