He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.” – Psalm 107:29

Did anyone get stuck without an umbrella or raincoat this week so far? The sudden storms may catch us by surprise! The Psalmist knows the power of God through nature and God’s power to calm the fiercest storms. As suddenly they start, they end just as quickly. When we face stormy times in our lives, we can rely on God to bring peace and stillness to the storms. He is our strength, our Helper in the midst of trying times. Never are we alone in the midst of the power of those storms.

Please let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree. Genesis 18:4

What a tree house! I wonder what was there first—house or tree? Perhaps you have a favorite tree in your memory, at your home, or one you have seen somewhere in the world. Maybe one you remember climbing as a child or one that simply was beautiful. On these summer days, spend some time with God under a shade tree and be blessed. Rest yourself there a bit and be comforted in the presence of God.

He has sent Him to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways. Acts 3:26

Paul is speaking to the crowd after the healing of the lame man and reminds them that the healing is intended to be the back story. The front story is the power of the Holy Spirit at work in them so that they might believe and repent. Paul reminds us that the greatest miracle is not the physical healing—it is the transformation of the human heart. That is the Spirit’s deepest work. Keep working on transformation in your life and be renewed by the Spirit. Remember the fruits and ask the Spirit for help every morning!

They had Peter and John brought before them and began to question them: “By what power or what name did you heal this man?” Acts 4: 7

Peter and John were under pressure from the authorities because they had healed the lame man. Peter proclaimed that they did it in the name of Jesus, whom they had crucified. Less than politely, they were asked to leave the city. But Peter and John continued to stand up with courage and proclaim the truth. As a result, many came to know Jesus through their example.

There are times when we as individuals and we as the church must stand up for Jesus and what He teaches and preaches. The challenge often is figuring out how and what to stand for without turning others away. Beginning with conversation and building rapport with each other, we can make great progress in understanding how we can best be a witness to His love. Yes—there are many ways to do it, but choosing the way that promotes love and peace takes more thought and intentionality. Choose Christ!

“But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.” Matthew 6:33

In Matthew 6:33, Jesus calls us to “seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,” and it’s a lot like learning the game of golf. No one becomes skilled by accident, but through steady focus, practice, and putting first things first. Just as a golfer dedicates time to the fundamentals like grip and the swing, we grow spiritually by consistently choosing God as our priority. But when we keep Him first, everything else will fall into place, just like it does with practice and more practice. The more we seek Him, the more our lives can reflect His purpose and direction. Wish our golfers good luck today at the tournament.

“Repent, then, and turn to God, so that your sins may be wiped out, that times of refreshing may come from the Lord, and that he may send the Messiah, who has been appointed for you - even Jesus.”
Acts 3:19-20

We’re called on to turn back to God. Not to shame us, but because God wants to heal us, restore us, refresh us. We all know what it feels like to get off track. Repentance isn't just feeling bad about something we’ve done wrong, it's choosing to turn around and come home to God. And we do that, we find grace, forgiveness, and “times of refreshing.” Sometimes the fresh start we need begins with an honest prayer and one faithful step in a better direction.

“While the man held on to Peter and John, all the people were astonished and came running to them in the place called Solomon’s Colonnade. When Peter saw this, he said to them: ‘Fellow Israelites, why does this surprise you? Why do you stare at us as if by our own power or godliness we had made this man walk?’” Acts 3:11-12

When we've prayed for help, peace, guidance, have we ever been surprised when God provided? The crowd saw this man healed, and they could hardly believe it! Peter question why they were so surprised. God is still powerful, still kind, and still able to do more than people expect. We may not always know how God will answer, but we can trust that God is already at work!
