True greatness is not in strength, but in humility, like that of a little child. Child-like faith receives all good things as gracious gifts from our Father in heaven, and whoever is humbled like a little child will be “the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.” Though in our sin we deserve to be “drowned in the depth of the sea,” we have instead been drowned—“buried”—with Christ in Baptism and then raised to the new, humble life of a child of God.

Jesus asked His disciples: “But who do you say that I am?” but the question is also put to us. By the ministry of the Gospel, the Father reveals His Son to us on earth. Thus we believe and confess that He is “the Christ, the Son of the living God.” As He died for our transgressions and was raised for our justification, He looses us from all our sins and preserves our life within His Church, against which even “the gates of hell shall not prevail.” Through Him we also offer ourselves “as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God.”

The same God who laid the foundations of the earth is the Author and Giver of life who governs all things by His Word. His wisdom and power are beyond our understanding, except as He reveals Himself in the incarnate Word, Christ Jesus. In Christ, He draws near to us in mercy. In our mortality and sinful unbelief, we do not always recognize the Lord Jesus. But as we cry out in fear, He speaks, “Do not be afraid,” and He reaches out His hand to save us. For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

By the Gospel of Jesus, we have been made the children of God, “not because of works but because of Him who calls.” He has come with divine compassion to save us from sin and death and to feed us with Himself. As our Lord Jesus once fed His disciples and the crowds, He now takes bread, blesses it by His Word to be His very body and distributes it to His Church by the hand of His called and ordained servants. And this bread is also more than enough for His whole Church to eat and to be satisfied.

God has chosen us to be “His treasured possession” not because of any strength in us, but because He loves us. He has searched for us and found us in love, and He has bestowed on us great value by the great price that He has paid on the cross. Now we are the treasure hidden in a field, covered by the cross and “called according to His purpose.” There is nothing in all creation that can separate us from “the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

The good Seed, Jesus Himself, brings forth a harvest of faith and bears good fruits. But whatever is sown apart from His Word bears only weeds of unbelief and sin. Thankfully, the Lord lets the weeds grow together with the good plants while He continues to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins. He thus preserves His Church in righteousness. Though we do not yet see it, the Spirit helps us persevere now, confident that “the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

Though we have died with Christ in Holy Baptism and are raised to new life in Him, each of us still host within ourselves a battle between the old Adam and our new creation. So we rejoice in Jesus Christ, our gentle King, who comes “righteous and having salvation” and speaks peace to our embattled hearts. By His blood of the New Testament He sets us free and returns us to the stronghold of our Baptism.

The outcome of sin is death, but eternal life is a free gift of God. He has set us free from the slavery of sin and brought us from death to life. We are no longer condemned by the law, but are saved by grace. Though we may be hated and maligned by the world for the name of Christ, we abide in the care of our Father in heaven. Christ is with us as a warrior who has overcome our enemies. He delivers your heart, mind, body and life into the land of the living.
