First Church Congregational

First Church Congregational An open and affirming church of the United Church of Christ No matter who are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

We are an Open and Affirming Church which means: We extend the extravagant welcome of God to all people regardless of race, class, immigration status, ancestry, gender identity, marital status, ability or sexual orientation. See our Open and Affirming Statement. We are Servant Church which means: We put our faith into action by serving and caring for each other and serving and caring for the world

, because faith without works really is dead. At First Church we come to encounter God and engage the world. We are a Praying Church which means: We know that while faith without works is dead, we also know that works and engagement in public life and service without personal faith and spiritual vitality is mere moralism. When 2 billion Christians start praying, things will change. We are a Progressive Church which means: We believe in a dynamic God who is still speaking and revealing to us – through Scripture, reason, history, science and the experiences of life – the ways of justice and peace. Our faith is 2,000 years old, but our thinking is not. We are a Covenant Community which means: We live together in community, sharing the joy and sorrows of life, the journey of faith, supporting each other and reaching out to others to join with us. God has called us into the church, to share the cost and joy of following Jesus. We are a member of the denomination called the United Church of Christ, know to its friends as the UCC. How cool is it when you're on the program at Carnegie Hall?
We're sending good vibrations to our Chancel Choir members and Music Director Frank Martignetti for their performance tonight at the iconic concert hall. Frank is a Carnegie Hall veteran, but for our choir members it's a first! Congratulations! We're so proud!

First Church volunteers continued our tradition of hosting the end-of-year picnic for students in the Nourish Bridgeport ESL program. It was a joy to help the students and their families celebrate their accomplishments learning English. Special thanks to Nikki Kenney for pulling it all together and the volunteers who joined her.

Celebration Sunday 2026 was such a joyful day. We had great weather, great pizza from Fire Engine Pizza Co. Black Rock, a bounce house and lots of time for fellowship. We also welcomed new members to our church and our Mike Traum for so many of these great photos.

Thank you to the crafty crew of volunteers who spent the morning making personalized bookmarks for kindergartners at the Madison School in Bridgeport this morning. In honor of their graduation, the church is gifting them each a new book to read and enjoy this summer as they get ready for first grade! Special thanks to Holly Franquet for organizing the project!
