First Church Congregational

First Church Congregational An open and affirming church of the United Church of Christ No matter who are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

We are an Open and Affirming Church which means: We extend the extravagant welcome of God to all people regardless of race, class, immigration status, ancestry, gender identity, marital status, ability or sexual orientation. See our Open and Affirming Statement. We are Servant Church which means: We put our faith into action by serving and caring for each other and serving and caring for the world

, because faith without works really is dead. At First Church we come to encounter God and engage the world. We are a Praying Church which means: We know that while faith without works is dead, we also know that works and engagement in public life and service without personal faith and spiritual vitality is mere moralism. When 2 billion Christians start praying, things will change. We are a Progressive Church which means: We believe in a dynamic God who is still speaking and revealing to us – through Scripture, reason, history, science and the experiences of life – the ways of justice and peace. Our faith is 2,000 years old, but our thinking is not. We are a Covenant Community which means: We live together in community, sharing the joy and sorrows of life, the journey of faith, supporting each other and reaching out to others to join with us. God has called us into the church, to share the cost and joy of following Jesus. We are a member of the denomination called the United Church of Christ, know to its friends as the UCC. We've enlisted the cuteness of kindergarten rockstar Tommy to promote the Blessing of the Backpacks this Sunday at 10:15 a.m.! Bring your empty backpacks or school bags to worship and The Rev. Vanessa Rose will give them a blessing. You'll even score a small gift to kick-start the school year with faith! Just don't expect those Straight A's to magically appear... you still need to put in the work for those 🎉📚🥰🙏

Our Senior Pastor, the Rev. Vanessa Rose, offered the invocation at today's fall kickoff meeting of the Fairfield Men's Association, which meets Tuesdays here in Wakeman Hall Sept-June. Afterwards, she gave the men a fascinating sanctuary tour which included some history( dating back to our 1639 founding) as well as the artful stories behind our amazing Tiffany Glass stained windows.

A shout out to George, one of the members of BSA Troop 82 Fairfield, CT who have been working on their Citizenship in the Community Merit badge by joining us in our weekly efforts to bake brownies for the Feel the Warmth program at Nourish Bridgeport.

We've been baking big batches of brownies for more than a year for nOURish, which serves them at its weekly community dinner at the Harrison Apartments in Bridgeport.

Thanks to George, his fellow scouts and ALL the First Church volunteers who have made this happen.

We can't promise you straight A's (you've got to work for those), but getting your backpack blessed is a great wait to kickoff the school year with faith. We'll be blessing empty backpacks and giving students a special gift at our 9/6 service @10:15 a.m service. All kids welcome.

We'll also be asking for God's blessing for all students, teachers, educators and parents during the coming school year. 📚✝️
