First Church Congregational

First Church Congregational An open and affirming church of the United Church of Christ No matter who are or where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here.

We are an Open and Affirming Church which means: We extend the extravagant welcome of God to all people regardless of race, class, immigration status, ancestry, gender identity, marital status, ability or sexual orientation. See our Open and Affirming Statement. We are Servant Church which means: We put our faith into action by serving and caring for each other and serving and caring for the world

, because faith without works really is dead. At First Church we come to encounter God and engage the world. We are a Praying Church which means: We know that while faith without works is dead, we also know that works and engagement in public life and service without personal faith and spiritual vitality is mere moralism. When 2 billion Christians start praying, things will change. We are a Progressive Church which means: We believe in a dynamic God who is still speaking and revealing to us – through Scripture, reason, history, science and the experiences of life – the ways of justice and peace. Our faith is 2,000 years old, but our thinking is not. We are a Covenant Community which means: We live together in community, sharing the joy and sorrows of life, the journey of faith, supporting each other and reaching out to others to join with us. God has called us into the church, to share the cost and joy of following Jesus. We are a member of the denomination called the United Church of Christ, know to its friends as the UCC. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to say hi at last night's Fairfield Community Services Summer Concert on the Green featuring the Sun Kings - A Beatles Tribute The church was happy to sponsor their fun concert and hand out some bubbles the kids in the crowd loved. Special thanks our Music Director Frank Martignetti and Minister of Children and Families Kim Feeney --along with some cute junior helpers-- for serving as the welcome crew in our tent!

As one of the congregations that helped to found Operation Hope of Fairfield more than 40 years ago, we are happy to share this important news from our next door neighbor. Welcome, Fernando!

📣📣📣Operation Hope of Fairfield is thrilled to share that following a comprehensive search by The Strategy Group, LLC, its Board of Directors announces the appointment of Fernando Muñiz as the next Executive Director, effective June 1, 2026. Muñiz succeeds Carla Miklos, who retired after 19 years of extraordinary leadership at the end of March 2026.

Muñiz brings more than 25 years of experience as a nonprofit executive and government leader, with a strong track record of guiding complex social service organizations toward growth and impact.

“Replacing a leader of Miklos’ caliber is a monumental task, and I am thankful to the Search Committee members for their diligence and dedication throughout this process,” said Colleen Connor, Board Chair. “We are incredibly pleased to welcome Fernando Muñiz to Operation Hope. The Board is confident that Muñiz's extensive background in nonprofit work, strategic vision, compassion for the mission and collaborative leadership style are exactly what we need to guide our organization into our next chapter of growth and impact as we launch a capital campaign for a new home for Operation Hope.”

The church was honored to host the Mill River Wetland Committee, Inc. Founder's Day Celebration for the second consecutive year. The event honors the enduring legacy of Joy Shaw (shown here in the green sweater) who in 1967 began the efforts to protect the town's wetlands. Holly Franquet, a member of our Creation Care Pathway, was one of many people, who attended the program.
