Bishop Thomas J. Bickerton's 2026 State of the Church address, delivered at the 227th Annual Conference Session, included a direct ask for every pastor, leader, and layperson in our churches: get clear on your purpose.
In his words, the first key question is this: Is your purpose your local church, or the people around it who don't yet know God's grace? Is it your project, or what that project can offer someone else? Is your purpose your cause, or the bridge between what you believe and how you live it out? Or is your purpose simply you?
Purpose is just the first of several areas Bishop Bickerton named for reflection. He also asked us to consider our picture, what a new beginning could actually look and feel like, our plan for the intentional decisions ahead, and the part each of us is called to play in getting there.
In the days and weeks ahead, we'll periodically share short clips from the address here on Facebook, each one pointing back to the full article. The goal is to keep this message, and this call to purpose, front and center in our local churches as we prepare for what Bishop Bickerton calls "the sea change ahead."

A New Year's Message from New York Annual Conference Lay Leader Gail Douglas-Boykin:
As the year draws to a close, many of us stand at an invisible doorway. Behind us is a year full of effort, loss, learning, exhaustion, and change. Ahead of us is something wide and largely unnamed. The instinct, especially in uncertain times, is to pack everything. Every lesson. Every disappointment. Every unresolved fear. We tell ourselves that carrying more will make us safer. It rarely does.

Reflection Questions:

Where has future-thinking begun to feel like pressure rather than possibility for me?
What signals—fatigue, joy, restlessness, clarity—have I been ignoring?
What question seems to be quietly forming beneath my plans for the coming year?

Before the year ends, choose one thing you will consciously release.

It could be…
A belief about yourself.
An expectation that never came to fruition.
A pattern of self-judgment.
A demand you have been placing on your own life.
This is not loss.
It is preparation.

On this first Sunday of the season of Advent, we at Fairfield Grace are thankful for the blessing of our congregation, which was able to donate 600 pounds of food and numerous gift cards to the Bridgeport Rescue Mission to feed the hungry. This is truly the Christ spirit among us.
