Grief is a to-do list you can't touch.

It's the laundry piling up while you sit and stare at nothing. It's the bills you know are due, the emails you haven't opened, the calls you keep meaning to make.....all of it sitting there, waiting, while you can't make your body do a single thing about it. Not because you're lazy. Not because you don't care. Because your brain is too busy holding the weight of someone gone to spare any bandwidth for the mundane.

People see the dishes in the sink and think you've let yourself go. They don't see that just getting out of bed already used up everything you had today.

Grief doesn't care about your responsibilities. It doesn't wait for a better time. It just sits in the middle of your life and dares everything else to keep functioning around it.

On the 25th anniversary of 9/11, we remember the lives lost and hold all who mourn in prayer.

In the days following 9/11, our global Lutheran partners shared words of prayer and solidarity:

"We join you in the spiritual battle and prayer for forgiveness and love knowing that the battle is not ours but God's, and that the truth and God's victory will always prevail." —LWF Regional Office for Africa (Kenya)

"May there be ways to comfort the mourners as well as the survivors, and may the church be part of that work. May all the deceased rest in peace." —Church of Sweden

"Your pain is our pain. We were shocked to watch this unprecedented act of violence and terrorism. We therefore share your sadness and sorrow for the loss of so many innocent lives." —Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan

"May God help us resist the forces of evil and spread peace in the world." —Protestant Church of the Augsburg Confession of Alsace and Lorraine

When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be earthquakes in various places, and famines. These are the beginning of birth pains...And the gospel must first be preached to all nations...Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved. Mark 13:7–8,10, 13, NIV

Lord our God, Ruler over the world, whose longing is to see your thoughts and your will in all peoples, we come before you and ask that we may find strength in your Word and never cease to hope for the coming of your kingdom. Even when the world storms and rages, even when earthly kingdoms rise up against each other and everything seems dark, even then be present. Let your kingdom go quietly forward, to the honor of your name. Help us come closer to the goal Jesus has shown us, closer to the time we wait for, the day of his coming when all shall be made new and good through your power, through your Spirit. Amen.

Prayers of comfort, courage, and hope for every day of the year from Christoph Friedrich Blumhardt, with corresponding verses from Scripture.
