This Sunday, on the 50th day after Easter, we celebrate the Day of Pentecost, the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the birthday of the church. Pentecost marks the transition from the old to the new. From the Old Testament to the New Testament, from the old age to the new age, from the time of the prophets to the time of the apostles, from the children of Israel to the children of God.

It is the dawning of a new era which all of the prophets, priests, and kings foreshadowed, prefigured, and foretold. It is the dawning of the new age when God would come and pour out His Spirit on all flesh, on all peoples, tribes, and nations, and into every language under the sun. A whole new beginning. A brand new day.

"When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them." - Acts 2

The Book of Job is one of the greatest books in the Old Testament, if not the whole Bible. It deals with the age-old question, "Why do bad things happen to good people?" This Lenten Season we will be exploring this poignant and profound work considered by many to be one of the greatest pieces of literature in history.

We all suffer - both publicly and privately. A husband loses a job. A mother loses her baby. A parent dies. A child gets a divorce. In our modern world today, we see and experience more and more of the sorrow and suffering in our world day by day. It's hard to take in and process all the pain and problems out there. We need the Book of Job now more than ever.

Martin Luther said that the Book of Job was 'magnificent and sublime.' Others have called Job the 'Shakespeare of the Bible.' Jerome said it was like an eel, since the more you try to contain and control it, the slippier it becomes. The purpose of our Lenten emphasis this year is to learn how to apply the message of Job as we travel through the valleys of life. In the end, we pray that we may confess along with Job, "The Lord gives and the Lord takes away, Blessed be the Name of the Lord." - Job 1

"Home For Christmas" (Advent In Isaiah)

What we find in the book of Isaiah is that when Messiah comes, He brings with Him a kingdom. He comes to provide a home and haven for God's people under His gracious and loving care. This Advent we will focus on several passages in Isaiah where God's promises are fulfilled in Christ and in His second coming. While we long to find peace, comfort, and belonging this time of year, our ultimate Christmas gift is our citizenship in heaven. This is the home Jesus has come to bring, as we are brought back from exile, and ushered into our eternal home where we will live and reign with Him forever. We pray you will find comfort and consolation this season at Bethany as we reflect on the good news of Christ's incarnation and our expectation of His return.
