Today, we once again turned to Romans, where Paul reminds us of the command to “love your neighbor as yourself.” We are indeed grateful to be a congregation that, in the words of Bishop John Shelby Spong, strives to “love wastefully.” And yet we know, "there is still more to do".

"Nothing Common About Common Sense!"

The Prologue
In the Witness from the Epistles in the letter the apostle Paul penned to the church at Rome, the man from Tarsus makes a bold statement as he comments on the ancient Hebraic Law, particularly addressing the big ten historically called the ten commandments. While not dismissing these sacred covenantal decrees in this enlightening epistolary offering, Paul makes a most salient point, pointing out that love is the great equalizer, the absolute law. Yes, Paul makes life delightfully simple! Be loving! Always and everywhere be loving! The rest will take care of itself!

Nature and worship aligned yesterday on a gorgeous, crisp late-summer morning beneath the beautiful Trees for Tomorrow pavilion! We gathered together to dive into Romans and its powerful call to "pursue hospitality to strangers"...a message as challenging as it is beautiful.

Even the birds and pine squirrels joined the chorus!🐿🐦‍⬛

How lucky we are to be able to experience fellowship in such a beautiful place, surrounded by God’s creation!🌲

OUTDOOR SERVICE at Trees for Tomorrow!

This week Pastor Tim shares his sermon "Reasoning Together!"

The Prologue
Let us all acknowledge that living in community is hard work, difficulties an emerging reality in every case, even within the best relationships. In terms of the “Congregational Way”, the polity surrounding congregationalism is always a messy exercise! As if it was not bad enough that the early “followers of the way” of Jesus, these sectarian outliers who became known as Christians, were constantly pursued by Romans, disputes continually arising about an ever emerging and evolving theology. More specifically, the complexity surrounding the development of Christological constructs, the raucous debate regarding inclusiveness versus exclusiveness. The apostle Paul reminds us contemporary church sorts to keep our eyes on the prize, that love trumps any and every obstacle that we can imagine! To recall a line from Michael Jackson, be a lover, not a fighter, never a hater! Kumbaya!

This week Pastor Tim shares his sermon "Any Means Necessary!"

The Prologue
There are some Sundays when the lectionary appears from first glance to be a homiletical desert. Thank goodness those Sundays are far and few between. Other Sundays, like today, however, offer an overflowing plethora of textual options making sermon preparation much less challenging.

In the Witness from the book of Exodus today, we read the story of two bold women, Shiphrah and Puah. This subversive couple deviously hatching a brilliant plan to willfully dodge the demands of the Pharaoh, who would have been either Amenhotep II (18th Dynasty) or Ramesses II (19th Dynasty), saving perhaps thousands of baby Hebrew boys and preparing the way for the birth of Moses. In the Witness from the Epistles we read that we are to present ourselves as living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God. This observation includes the always necessary reminder that while we are many individuals, we are one body in Christ! Finally, in the Witness from the Gospels in Matthew, we read a story in which Peter proclaims the bold revelation that Jesus is the long-awaited Messiah, a text that makes the audacious claim that Jesus founded the Church in that bellwether moment. We will see which lection gets top billing today!

This morning we welcomed Jenny from Habitat for Humanity Northwoods Wisconsin and Regina, a member of a partner family, to share more about their organization and the many ways to volunteer.

Serving Vilas and Oneida counties, Northwoods Habitat for Humanity builds and repairs homes and operates a ReStore. Volunteers are needed for a variety of opportunities, from construction and home repairs to providing lunch for work crews.

Please consider getting involved in this important, local mission! 🏚🔨🏡👩‍🦽
