Jesus said that the greatest commandment in the law of God was to love God with all one's heart, soul, and mind. He further stated that the second most important commandment was to love our fellow humans.

If you look at the Ten Commandments (humanity's greatest moral code), you can see that the first five commandments focus on loving God. The next five commandments focus on loving people.

Exodus 20:3-17 say:

3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.

4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.

5 Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;

6 And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.

9 Six days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work:

10 But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

11 For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

12 Honor thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

13 Thou shalt not kill.

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 Thou shalt not steal.

16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbor's.

Did you know that the Ten Commandments are not the only Law of God? The Bible books of Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy all contain commandments that God gave to the Hebrew people (children of Abraham).

You may have heard that people living in Old Testament times were saved by keeping the law. That is not true. No one is saved by keeping the law. Why was the law given, then? It was given to show us how far humanity falls short of God's standards.

"Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator."
Galatians 3:16-19

I John 3:4 says:
"Whosoever committeth sin transgresseth also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law."

This verse explains exactly what sin is. It is any transgression, or disobedience, of God's law. Therefore in order to know what sin is, we need to know what God's law says. We need to know what sin is in order to repent of it (turn from it). If we are slaves to sin, then the law has power over us. "What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law." (Romans 7:7a)

As Christians, we can claim not to be in bo***ge to the law, because Christ has freed us from the law, but then we need to claim the power of Christ not to fall back into our old sins. 2 Peter 2:19 says, "While they promise them liberty, they themselves are the servants of corruption: for of whom a man is overcome, of the same is he brought in bo***ge." This verse, in context, is speaking of false teachers who preach that Christians have liberty to sin.

If someone claims to be a Christian, preaches "liberty" in Christ, and then willfully, brazenly, unrepentantly breaks God's law, check that person's sincerity. We all sin because we are weak and can be deceived, misled, or tempted, but it is wrong to think that God gave us liberty in order to go back into bo***ge to sin. "For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another." (Galatians 5:13)

It's not "judging" to repeat what God has said. It's "judging" when you make up your own rules for people to follow. So be careful. Read God's law, not for salvation, but to know what God has called sin.

So what is sin? Sin is the wrong things we say, do, or think.

But how do we know what is right and what is wrong? Do our ethics depend on our situations? Do you "follow your heart" or "go with your gut" to figure out what is right or wrong? Can what is right for you be wrong for me, and vice versa? Are we democratic about it? Is something wrong just because most people say it is? Is something wrong just because I feel that it is? Is something wrong just because you got caught doing it? Is there such a thing as a "white" lie, or are all lies wrong?

How do I go about naming my sin, in order to repent of it, if I have no set standard of right or wrong?

"In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea, and saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." Matthew 3:1-2

"But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees come to his baptism, he said unto them, O generation of vipers, who hath warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bring forth therefore fruits meet for repentance." Matthew 3:7-8

I used to be puzzled by the last sentence, because "meet for" means "appropriate for." John the Baptist told the religious leaders of his day (the Pharisees and the Sadducees) to bring forth fruits appropriate for repentance. "Fruits" are works, or actions. Was he telling them to sin, in order to repent? No, he was asking them to name their sins (confess their sins). Their pride prevented naming their sins, and that was a sign they had not truly repented.

"I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." -- Jesus (Luke 5:32)

Churches are not made up of inherently righteous people. Nobody is inherently righteous in God's eyes. Only repentant sinners can be forgiven and given Christ's righteousness in place of their sin.

Repentance means a 180-degree turnaround. It means you were taking a path to a destination, and then turned around and went the opposite direction away from that destination. It means you no longer choose what you originally chose.

Maybe people don't repent because they don't know what repentance is. Maybe they don't repent because they don't know what they are doing wrong (what they should repent of). Maybe they don't repent because few churches actually teach repentance any more.
